Last night I entered a $1 tournament on Full Tilt where 775 players entered and ended up taking it down.
I played in the early/middle tournament stages very solid just playing a standard TAG game. I managed to accumulate enough chips to sail throughout most of the tournament. We played for around 2.5 hours and the bubble burst without me even realising.
With 74 players getting paid it was a slow way before the tables started getting shorter and shorter. After the antes kicked in I had around 17k in chips which was plenty at the time and didn't make any big moves, because I felt there was no need, even to make the final table.
With 12 players remaining I loosened up my game and took advantage of the FT bubble. The table was very tight/passive so I would come into the pot 2.5x the BB and expect to take the pot down 75% of the time.
I almost doubled me stack with this play and then I found myself with aces in some aggressive pre-flop action and almost tripled up.
The final table buble burst and I came into it 2nd in chips. With a player in 9th soon busting I made a play that turned out of the best. A middle position limper came into the pot and the small blind completed. I found myself with 65o but with so much money in the pot, and my tight image I thought it was a good spot to make a move.
I raised it up but both players called. The flop brought 955 and I got very lucky, taking down a 57k pot.
Then the talbe dwindled down and it got 6-handed. I had 88 on the button and the previous two limpers did exactly the same thing, limped. I raised it up and this time only the first limper called.
The flop brought 349 with two spades and the limper open-overbet shoved for over 100k. I tanked and finally decided to call, wondering what kind of 9 he would play pre-flop like this. He flipped over 66 and I took down a nice pot.
The table got 5-handed and I kept applying pressure without noone playing back at me. I had some beats put on me (8 exactly lol) and had some big (short-handed) hands run into each other like my AT and his KK.
However, within an orbit or two I'd make the loss back with the blinds and antes.
With the play 3-handed, I managed to knock out a very good player and recently made friend on railbirds, pushing my stack up to 1 million, with my last opponent on a very low 80k.
I got T2 on the button and with the harringtons flyswatting (or 10-1) rule I open-shoved and he made the called with A5
The flop came 6T2, and I filled up on the river taking the tournament down.
A couple of hands occured throughout the final table where I was put down because I open-shoved any two cards against stacks that only represnted 10% or less of my stack.
However, I did make some sketchy post-flop play on the FT but my aggression pre-flop helped me out.
I took down $186 and now I have a decent roll that I mae from a single freeroll cash.
