here's a very useful blog that explains the different types of tournaments:

Types of Online Tournaments

Here's the info about the Shootouts though:

  • Shootout Tournaments: In a shootout tournament, unlike other MTT tables, tables are not balanced as players are eliminated. Play continues until there is a winner at each table and then the winners of each table are moved to new tables to play against each other in the next round. This process continues until the final table is achieved. An easlier way to think of them is that they are a series of 1-Table Tournaments.

There can be a Double Shootout meaning that you have to win at least two tables in order to win the tournament. This also applies to Triple, Quadruple and so on where you must win that particular amount in order to win the Tournament.

Often times in larger Shootouts, such as a Triple Shoot out, there can be mulitple winners at each table that advance and/or it's possible at each level the winner(s) are rewarded a small percentage of the prize pool.

Shootouts can consist of Heads Up Matches to a full 10 person table. For example: you could have a Triple Shoot out consisting of 4 player tables (64 players to start).
