how about i just play ya hu for 20$?
brazee Aug 20, 2008 4:49 pm
You just have to play aggressively, open up your hand ranges (Think AA to K9 as good). When on the button, raise, when the small blind check or call small raise. Just know you can win and you will!

Good luck and ship it to Abrazee on PS

Aggression is the key! Raise anything. It is not necessarily what you have but what your opponent has.(especially when heads up) Play aggressive but remember where your fold button is. And trying to get lucky does not hurt either.

When it’s down to just you and one other opponent, the whole dynamic of the game changes. Every subsequent hand is going to require an action or reaction from you. You can change the pace of the game at any point. When you’re down to heads-up play, you’re going to need to get aggressive. If you’re fortunate enough to have a timid opponent, you can easily manipulate them and take a lot of their stack before they realize what’s going on.

Playing heads-up, you’re always going to be in either the small blind or the big blind. The small blind is the preferable position, as you’re going to act rather than react. You’ll take control of the hand. The odds are that your opponent isn’t going to be holding a decent hand, so you should play aggressively most of the time. Learn what size raise it takes for your opponent to lay down his cards. It’s usually tough for him to call, even if he knows you’re just bluffing at him, because he’s going to be at a disadvantage for the rest of the hand unless he really hits something. If your opponent keeps folding his hands to your raise, why not keep raising? That way, you’ll also know that he probably has something when he decides to stay in the hand or plays back at you.

Raise and even go all-in with preflop include any Ace, any pocket pair, any two face cards, and suited connectors. You put pressure on your opponent when you do this, especially when you have him covered in chips. He knows that he’s got to put everything in to call you, and a lot of players can’t handle that, especially when they’re holding something like 6-2 offsuit. I never recommend folding your small blind in heads-up play, either. That is a timid play that forfeits your positional advantage.

Stay aggressive heads-up, and also consider mixing it up by slowplaying everything once in a while. Did you make the nut flush on the flop? Top pair with top kicker? Just call your opponent down. It’ll really bewilder him when you show it down on the river, and will make him afraid to bluff you in future hands.

Heads up is poker is by far the most interesting of all. When your playing in tourneys your learning the patterns of all the players at your table then once you get the handle on them your quickly changed to another table usually for the purpose of balancing etc. Heads up is just you and another chair.

Doyles Room has excillent heads up poker but remember, as a beginner in heads up poker.. Your not going to win them all, monitor your spending but don't hit the table affraid of losing because you will forget your aggressive game at the first fold!

Gl, hope to see you on the felts.

Button: Raise any pair, any ace or king, any connectors to 65(no gap), suited connectors to 43 (2 gaps), any 2 cards 8 or above.

Big Blind: Raise any limp with any 2 if your opponent has been very aggressive (he's probably limping with utter trash) or your opponent is still only raising fairly premium hands. In the latter case, his limp is probably with a hand he should be raising with which means it's probably better than the trash you're holding. Bet a rag flop against him but if you have any doubts just check. Usually these players are so afraid you're trapping they won't bet unless they've hit at least middle pair.

I call raises with the same hands listed above and will call a mini-raise with any 2 except the true trash like 72 , 32,83, etc.

nobody can teach you better HU then yourself! Use the 5$ in some HU games and practise! Practise makes perfect! Good Luck!
Miski Aug 20, 2008 6:57 pm

I'll split it with you TC cause it's a Topcat-loaded-question...No one can teach you how to play heads up....because it'll be diametrically different for any given opponents......

Oh yes u can have style strategies and hand favorites but there's no substitute for playing 200 or more sit n' go's to help sense what to do.

I sense that the question/challenge did it's job: thought provoking and topically important.....good show TC!!

Honestly, I can't teach you how to play heads up, it all depends on how the person you're playing is playing, are they aggressive, are they tight, are they LAG, TAG...ect ect. The best advice I can give is for the first few hands sit back and let them set the pace, than you can decide what the best way to play is against them. I hope that this gave you some ideas on how to improve HU, than again, I'm writing a comment to try and win $5 because I have no bankroll, so maybe my advice isn't the greatest lol. Good luck!

Keep ur $$ or send it to the needy. Watch any HU match on TV and see what the pros are calling and raising. They just dont fold on the pre flop. Aggression can be rewarding just dont forget how to fold. GL
