When do you rebuy...?

Aug 19, 2008 10:42 pm Report Abuse

Truthfully, Rebuy tourneys scare me... I just don't know how to play them.
I've seen a bunch here at railbirds about how to play them...
very aggressive with overplay etc...

But, when do you rebuy ?

Do you use auto-rebuy ?
Do you rebuy when you are out of chips?
Do you rebuy when you're at a large disadvantage?
how close to the break or cutoff do you rebuy?

Lastly... how many rebuys is too much?
(My problem)
Do you have a cut off number or amount?

Is there an amount that tells you "I'm done for the night?"

Thanks...

I have a whole blog on this bro.....but yeah I'm crazy during rebuys. I use the double auto-rebuy feature, and all I do is shove or fold so I wait til I see a hand I like and bam it goes in the middle. the first hr is just about building a stack
ronster14 Aug 19, 2008 10:50 pm
I personally will usually rebuy once at the very beginning, to start off with double the chips and maybe rebuy twice more, to ahve the double amount if im out really early. I guess it all depends on your bankroll and when exactly you get knocked out, if it's early and you want another chance then by all means rebuy but I don't think you should say 30-50 minutes into the game, I don't see the point you'll most likely be dead money, just my opinion

I'm getting braver about rebuys, I always rebuy at the beginning and always add-on. GL DeltaQ I never over rebuy -- thats stupid- hehehe

kall3_p0k3r Aug 19, 2008 10:51 pm

my rule is to make maximum 2 re-buys and ONE add-on in a tourney...if you aint running good after 2 re-buys,u might start to think if this really is the tourney for you! If your running good in a re.buy tourney, I wouldnt make any add on or so...this might effect your play bcos ur dealing with a twice as big buy in(if addon)...

DeltaQ Aug 19, 2008 10:55 pm
Well... a 50¢ rebuy on a 10¢ tourney is over-rebuy in my book... but what about others... where the prize pool is getting massive too?
superdog777 Aug 19, 2008 10:56 pm
if ur gunna play a rebuy then u need to rebuy rite off and add on at the end ... if u get cracked b4 the add on quit....
superdog777 Aug 19, 2008 10:56 pm
its not ur day
DeltaQ Aug 19, 2008 10:59 pm
I'm thinking more along the lines of $1 or $2 with unlimited $1 R/A...
Likely to be my starting point...
skitmoney Aug 19, 2008 11:03 pm
exactly as calculated move said....the first hour should be spent building as big a stack as possible..
bigword Aug 19, 2008 11:05 pm
I have noticed the more rebuys someone does, the more desperate they get to win back the chips they lost. Just my observation. I will do one sometimes.
CalculatedMove Aug 19, 2008 11:13 pm
If you play a rebuy trny and only do the first rebuy and add on, then you shouldn't play rebuys because the play the first hr is crazy and isn't like that usually after the first hr. I think you gotta be willing to put money into a rebuy say I put up 18 bucks in a 3 dollar rebuy which isn't bad, and lets say first pays 8K, well now you tell me if its worth it to rebuy, just remember the first hr is building a stack. I don't wanna say this, but I feel like the first hr is lotto, but with better odds in the long run
CalculatedMove Aug 19, 2008 11:17 pm
Also you gotta have discipline still say my range of hands that I push with are K/Qoff suit and up, well yeah I may put more money in trny then most who posted here, but I will often times go deeper in the trny then them as well just because my stack will be like at 15 to 20K at the end of the first break, that it almost gurantees a deep run.
MOOSE007 Aug 19, 2008 11:35 pm
I double up right away, then I feel it out if the vibe is there and I am funded I'll rebuy. Always add on, watch the people after still play like they can still re buy,and tighten up a bit.

Every re-buy I have seen there has been one fact I have found. If you re-buy more then 4 or 5 times the payout curve will soon require you to make the final table before you brake even. Yes every re-buy adds to the pot, but most of it goes to the top 1% of the payouts; and only a small amount gets added to the last place. The more you spend, the deeper you have to rank in the money to just get your entry money back. If you have to re-buy 5 or 6 times you are setting the odds against you so deeply it is not worth it. I'll give 2 examples to show it. First the ten cent FTP game, and then a $1 re-buy tourney also on FTP.

Lets the last FTP ten cent re-buy as an example. (#58485084) If you spend $2.10, so the dime plus 3 re-buys and an add-on, you would loose money if you "Make it in the money." You would have to place in or near the top 100 just to break even. And that is just 3+ the add-on. If you re-buy 5 times and then add-on you would have to make the top 50 out of 3600 just to break even. 7 re-buys and an add-on and you have to make about the top 35 out of 3600 just to break even. I admit, payoffs go up faster after that, but you are still looking at making the top 1% to break even at that point. I admit, this is from the dime re-buy game, but they all tend to come out about the same math in general. Looking at it from this perspective, in general more then 2 re-buys and an add-on you start setting the odds more against you then normal because just making the money dose not get you your money back. Try to never spend more then what last place will pay out in return.

Now a $1 re-buy on FTP number 58557230. It had 421 entrants, 320 re-buys and 134 add-ons. About average. Last place only payed out $2.75. So if you did one re-buy and one add-on, you would loose money if you made the money. If you did the buy-in, plus 2 re-buys and the add-on, now you have to make 27th out of 421 to get a $3.92 payout. You loose, although just a bit, but you still loose money with just $4 that you payed to play. If you buy-in, then do 5 re-buys and the add on you have to make 15th out of 431 just to make seven cents. The pay-out being $7.07 at 15th in this example.

These are actual examples, not just off the top of my head.

Personally I hate re-buys over all, but I have fun with the dime re-buy on FTP. But there I almost never re-buy. My whole point of it is see how far I can go on a dime. Made the top 20 once for over $20 on just ten cents. If you make the money on just ten cents you have made $1.50 to $2. on a dime.

Yes, I am crazy during the rebuy period.

I rebuy before the first hand is dealt.

I will challenge all ins with more than 2 players with almost anything, but my favorite hand doing this with is 7 8, suited or not.

My goal is to reach at least 16K in chips by the end of the rebuy period. To do this I need to get hot with the cards. Position doesn't mean a thing to me during the rebuy period and I will challenge with any marginal cards.

My goal is 1st place, just making the money isn't good enough. 2nd goal is final table. Anything less than that is failure.

For a $1.00 rebuy I will limit myself to $5.00 in rebuys and add-on.
For $3.00 I will move that to $15.00.

I never think of these tournaments entry fee as being what the buy-in is. I multiply it by 5.

If I have just 10K or less at the end of the rebuy I don't bother with the add-on. I just hope to get a lucky break with the cards after the rebuy is over and the real poker begins.

Remember, the goal is to win the tournament. Put yourself into that mind set. Just making the money isn't your goal, even though I have never seen a rebuy where 5 or 6 rebuys and just making the money won't leave you a small profit. Ten rebuys and you must make the final table to profit, but again the goal is 1st place.

I regularly play the $0.10 rebuy tourney on Full Tilt but have never once used a rebuy or add-on in it. I have considered the math, however and have developed the following theory:

If you're going to rebuy, do it as early as possible. The earlier you rebuy, the more the chips you receive are worth. Using the $0.10 tourney as an example, the first 1000 chips you get only cost you $0.01 for every 100 chips. Every time you do a rebuy, you're paying $0.05 for every 100 chips. Since the blinds start out at 15/30 you're getting about 33 big blinds for $0.50 or about 1.5 cents a blind. As the blinds go up, the chips you buy become less valuable. Once the chips you get from a rebuy would still leave you short stacked (less than 10 big blinds), it's a good time to throw in the towel and try again later.

That's just my thoughts on the matter. Hope that helps.

i dont play alot of rebuys....for some reason, i have really bad luck in them
AhhShh Aug 20, 2008 3:54 am
I play the $3 rebuys on tilt, before it starts I do 1 rebuy and that's it. If I'm out before the addon, I'm out. But if I make it to the addon, of course, I then do the addon.

Also, 10 mins before the rebuy period ends, I am super aggressive.
AhhShh Aug 20, 2008 3:56 am
One more thing I forgot to add, the rebuy stakes, obviously, there's a difference between $0.10 to $3.

Me personally I like to slow down in the rebuy tourneys cause there is plenty of donkies just waiting to give you there chips! I set a goal at the beginning of what i want my chipstack to be at the break if i dont reach it then i dont addon either!
