Would you fold AA?

Aug 19, 2008 10:21 am Report Abuse

On another forum I belong to the question was posed, in the first hand of a NLHE tournament with 3 players all-in before you, you are holding AA would you call? Money game only, no freerolls.

Some added questions of my own.

Why?

Would the cost of the tourny make a difference, as in would it make a difference if it was a $50 buy-in compared to a $500 buy-in, why?

Would it make a difference if you knew,as in played before or pros, some or all of the players at your table.

On the other site (which shall remain nameless) the overwhleming majority of people answered that there was no way they would fold AA per-flop, especially with so much money in the pot, so I am curious if Railbirds think the same way.

AA vs 3 other hands = good way to lose money
RuFF97 Aug 19, 2008 10:35 am
there is only ONE situation, when its correct (imo )...

And that is in SATELLITES, when you are just "before the tickets" and holding a big stack..

There it would make NO sense to put in any additional chip, if you think youll get the ticket just with folding...

except that.. I think there are no other situations in which its correct to lay the aces down..

That was Cards Chat I think, buyin cost makes no diff, player read not really, its a family pot and your chances are 62% or so, pot odds are 4:1, so go for it.

no i still wouldnt fold that is the best starting hand in holdum all that means is your chances of winning are lowered and whats to say you will get another hand in the game this is a good chance to quadruple up in the early stages
sp176 Aug 19, 2008 10:42 am
You shouldnt be playing if you were not willing to lose your money. That said, you don't get that many chances to quad-up so take it.

3 all in before me or more if i had AA i would fold. Cuz more in the hand the better chance AA would be beat. Well thats how i feel.

Only situation I can think of is if it is a satellite and you're on or near the bubble with a big enough stack where you can sit out until you get your prize. Say if a bigger or equally big stack puts pressure on you you can let the hand go knowing you are almost guaranteed to win.

I would fold it,.. I came to play in the tournament not go home after the first hand,.. I never like the odds when three go all in ahead of me,.. Railbirds card: Qh

bumped for the afternoon RBs.
Krafty3333 Aug 19, 2008 6:30 pm
you have 63% to quadruple your stack. real question is how fast you can click that call button?
Shiznizzled Aug 19, 2008 6:31 pm
That many people ahead of me are already all-in, so it's an easy fold. JUST because it's a money game and not a freeroll. Why, you ask? Because I have been in MANY freerolls where I was dealt AA on the first hand, went all-in with several other callers, and was among the first KO'd. If I'm paying to play this tourney with my own $$$, then I'm playing poker, not bingo. All-in pre-flop is a crap-shoot. Period.

I was short-stacked in this tourney and raised all-in pre-flop. I had 3 callers. This was the result. That's why I would fold. I see it allll the time.
Shiznizzled Aug 19, 2008 6:36 pm
ps... the AA guy is shown as a winner too, but that's because he had a massive stack, more than the other callers.
renegade_rott Aug 19, 2008 6:37 pm
weRailbird image uploaded: Aug 19, 2008 12:35 pmll, this was a freeroll, but I would do the same thing in a cash tourney also.
renegade_rott Aug 19, 2008 6:39 pm
Btw, I called and won. No preflop hand is gauranteed to win 100% of the time. but as long as you get the correct odds you should call.
T3HNU7Z Aug 19, 2008 6:39 pm
Under the circumstances you laid out, I would definitely fold. We all know AA is the best starting hand, but are you willing to be knocked out of the tournament in hopes that it can beat 3 other hands (possibly more if anyone is behind you)? Tournaments are about survival, not chip count. Sure it would be nice to quadruple up, but you're still more likely to lose against 3 players than win and that's vs. random hands. What if someone else ahead of you also has AA? Then you're even more likely to lose as you will both have an extremely hard time improving on your hand. If it were a freeroll, I might do it because the first hand people go berzerk with anything and you've nothing to lose. But if money were involved (no matter how much) I would fold.
CRAINT_DEGUN Aug 19, 2008 6:50 pm
Agree with u RuFF97...this is the only situation where u can fold AA .
Acousticdude Aug 19, 2008 6:53 pm
I ha ve folded them and I have played them. It all depends on the situation at the time
