Why AK blows...

Aug 10, 2008 1:28 am Report Abuse

Here are two perfect examples of why AK is the biggest setup in Hold'em (note that this was in back to back hands):

Full Tilt Poker Game #7580797955: $1 + $0.25 Sit & Go (57670410), Table 1 - 20/40 - No Limit Hold'em - 19:21:33 ET - 2008/08/09

Seat 6: stewllwin (1,270)
Seat 7: Valbaz (2,060)
Seat 8: windyspirit (1,500)
Seat 9: janh84 (855)
Valbaz posts the small blind of 20
windyspirit posts the big blind of 40
The button is in seat #6
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Sblounskched AsKd

Sblounskched raises to 160
Ricebrner folds
Ricebrner: Sorry man, hit 2 pair off the flop

*** SUMMARY ***

Seat 8: windyspirit (big blind) folded before the Flop
Seat 9: janh84 showed 3cKs and won (1,770) with a pair of Threes

This put me in pretty bad shape stack wise and only the top 3 get paid so I had to do something to get my stack back up. The very next hand I ended up with the EXACT same 2 cards. I steamed a little in the chat box to make it look like I was on tilt (which I sort of was) and pushed all-in hoping to get called by Ax or some low pocket pair. Here's how that turned out...

ak blows because u over play it
the power of AK is preflop
in fold equity
once u hit flop it is just a drawing hand
and u should play it as such
but remember a pair of 2s beats it
i make a ton off AK because of fold equity
and betting the flop but if u havent scared them off
by your continuation bet on the flop then treat it
like a regular draw, count ur outs and fold it if
its not in your favor
strengthandhonor Aug 10, 2008 1:36 am
also remember online people are donks
if i read ur list correctly u were up against a low stack
he didnt fold preflop to ur raise and he had K3 so he
most likely was gonna call anything
the only difference is i would have pushed him on flop
let him think u hit
otherwise he is just a donk and dont take it personal
that he made a donk play

I did make my usual continuation bet on the flop which he called. Then on the turn, he paired his 3 and picked up the 2nd nut flush draw. I pretty much had to call since I had already committed 400 to the pot and I had the nut flush draw, 2 overs to the board, and a gutshot straight draw. I admit that I overplayed the AK the next hand and part of that was tilt because I didn't want some stupid hand cracking it again and I was UTG so I didn't really want any callers except for the guy who just donked me with K3 but unfortunately that wasn't the case...

just shut up, shut up, shut up. I'm sick and tired of people saying the were committed to a hand because they have 25 - 30% of their chips in a pot. You didn't hit crap when he hit his three nothing. You were on a draw at the best, it was an easy fold at that point. He had no reason being the hand but you should have folded on the turn. The second hand was you being on tilt, A-J suited anyone would have called your 600 all in.
djfrunkpoker Aug 10, 2008 2:01 am
lol get outta here, u lost with it wen u had the best hand twice, that doesnt make it a set-up hand...it makes it a good hand that does NOT win 100% of the time, so suck it up, and of course...waaaaah
djfrunkpoker Aug 10, 2008 2:02 am
Fish, he was committed cuz the OTHER guy was so short, not cuz of his own chipstack, it wasnt a bad call on the turn, but i do second these people who take a couple bad beats and cry into their Railbird pillows shutting up
Sblounskched Aug 10, 2008 2:14 am
Do you even know what odds are, Fish_666? On the first hand, the pot had 1315 in it and I just had to put in 455 more. I don't think that was a particularly bad investment considering I had 14 outs:
3 aces, 4 10s, and 7 other spades...

If you're going to fold a 30% draw when you're getting basically exactly the right odds to call, be my guest but I for one know how math works. As for the second hand, I said I was on tilt... I got exactly the call that I wanted since I was a huge favorite preflop and it didn't work out. I knew I needed to either double up or hit the rail so I gambled. So how about you get out a calculator next time before you run around telling people to "shut up, shut up, shut up".

Negative as usual this is getting kind of old. Sure he posted a bad beat I can handle it, but instead of people trying to help you guys are just rude. Maybe its time for me to just move on to my other site full time.

AK is a great starting hand, it's great to raise with, however, the hardest thing most people seem to be able to deal with is that unless you hit the flop you have to let it go.

If you get nothing on the flop all it will do is loose you money more times then not.

Try not being so aggressive with it post flop, and be willing to fold it when you meet resistance.

Just like AA it's not indestructable, good luck to you.

I hate AK too, no matter how I play it, it loses! lost to a dang pp 4s today 2 times. OH well, thats jokerpoker. Better luck next time dude..........
FossTheHoss Aug 11, 2008 7:45 pm
ya bro I agree with strengthandhonor, AK is the shit you just gotta be able to let go when you know your beat.
