Poker Question

Aug 6, 2008 3:45 am Report Abuse

You're playing Texas Hold'em at your normal tourney/cash game table limits, and get dealt a low pair in mid position. You limp, and 4 players (you, SB, BB, button) see the flop. BINGO! You hit your trips.

This is a dream situation, and you stand to make a lot of cash. My question is:

What type of flop would make you lay down bottom set if your opponents were betting aggressively?

Also, on second thought, would you ever lay down TOP set?

Thanks,

Henrei

sure would and have. The one that comes to mind is, i was delt 99, the flop brought me trips, but........9 J Q suited, a very tight player bet high only to be raised, i knew i would get see this to the end and i was glad i folded, the out come, i had trip 9's, one player hit his flush and the winner hit his full house that beat my full house. a set of 10's or above i might be in there, but its like any other hand, what happens on the flop, turn and river is where and when you will have to decide. best of luck to you.

got to know your opponents, even a set doesnt win everytime. although I don't think I would fold top set before the river. I am going to see that card regardless.

you need a really strong read to fold any set. Even on a TcJcQc flop, you still have 10 outs for a full house/quads and you're so likely to stack someone who has a flopped flush or straight.

The other cards are important. Like whether or not there are draws on the board

it also depends a lot on the situation ...sometimes its hard to lay it down but u have to

a) with top set i´m only scared by draws.

b) yes i will lay it down to a draw. but i will do this only on turn. if u did ur job and played it correctly there should be no drawing hand which could complete on river or showdown.

I dont think id ever lay a set down on the flop. Id be figuring OK, if hes flopped a flush or a str8 (I not drawing dead here anyway) or a higher set good luck to him. I think youd be losing money long term to lay down here because they could be getting aggressive with 2 pair or a draw

I just folded middle set in a tourney earlier today. I had 88 and the flop came 789 suited.

Preflop there was a raise and re-raise and I called with a good feeling and because the raises did not jeopardize my stack all that much.

After the flop the raiser almost beat the dealer by pushing alln immediately. the re-raiser also moved almost as fast with his call. I used the same gut feeling after the flop as i had pre-flop. To call i would have crippled my stack and i was just 30 or so players away from the money. It was a good fold because there was a flush and a str8 made on the flop.

As hard as it can seem to fold a hand like that ,all the planets and stars were aligned against me and I had to lay the hand I was hoping for down.

It is kind of like calling with A semi-rag. On the flop you get your wish, an ace comes out, but the other 2 cards burst your bubble because you are out kicked to any other ace.

Bottom line is you must look at all the circumstances and make your decision on what you deduce from the situation.

At the end of the day it is only one hand and your decision could decide if it is the last one you play in that particular tourney.

dealt 66. flop 6 + 2 diamonds me raise...other all in i call person hit their flush. me outta tournament. point being a blog was written yesterday re: how would you play this? most said big rise or all in. so much for the all in call. lol

The only time I might lay down my set is to a 4 board flush that hasn't paired by the river, unless they shoved on the turn, or in a multiway pot with 1 card needed for a straight.
