Need Some Advice Please

Jul 26, 2008 5:06 am Report Abuse

This is a classic hand for me:

I get dealt something like Q7, K6, or other junk in the BB. Maybe 1-2 callers, the SB limps, and I check to see the flop.

The flop brings something like K85 or Q26, giving me top pair with junk kicker.

My question is how to play something like this, assuming the SB checks to you. I generally bet about half pot, maybe a bit more, to see where I am at...a lot of the time this takes the pot, but what to do when I get reraised? Usually, I'll fold to the reraise, but sometimes it just doesn't feel right to fold. Any help?

Playing bad hands out of the big blind is always tricky. I think bet/fold and check/fold are your two best options. If it's a dry flop I prefer betting out 2/3 pot or so and shutting down if I get raised (or even if someone flats).

i usually check/fold to a bet... but if it checks to me i usually bet around 2/3 the pot.. if they call.. and check again.. i usually check the turn and call the river depending on the bet.

to fold is almost NEVER wrong. it happens to often that you get beaten because of the weak kicker...fold to the reraise as long as you dont have to assume that its a bluff from your opponent...even when its sometimes hard to give up a toppair, but you will see...the chips you rescue through folding are the chips which gives you a more of gain when you get the monster some rounds later...

best of luck to you and stay patient!

I have had a problem with this too. I call it the big blind sucker punch.

My scenario usually looks like this K 8 big blind flop comes K 3 8 with the small blind limping in or a late position. if small blind checks I raise like you about half the pot and get the call. turn comes say 9. he checks I bet again and he re raises. I am left to ponder here if i'm not sure I have the best hand then I move and wait for a later hand ......plenty more to come . If I do call I usually run into something like trip 9's and kick myself for being in the hand anyway.

So my suggestion here is to live by the rule that sometimes it is best to keep your chips in front of you.

gl on the felts.

Actually I think you are doing it right EXCEPT that if there are more than 3 people in a non raised hand, you should check those kinds of flops. It is too easy for someone to have a better K or Q and even a set that they played passively because it was like 4 4. Don't put chips in the pot unless you think your ahead, or are intending to make a play. Just my opinion. Also, blinds are gone chips. Sometimes protecting your blinds will get you out of a tourney. There is a time and place for doing that, but you will know when that is.

!!!! STOP !!!! !!!! STOP !!!! !!!! STOP !!!! !!!! STOP !!!! !!!! STOP !!!!

What the hell are all of u are doing here!??? this limp he did and most players on micro and low limits do is wasting money! Do you hate money???

let´s have a look at the whole situation. You are in SB. The players in front all fold. Now u ahve to play the position and your opponent! Your Holecards doesn´t matter in this situation.

OP told us he only completes. why? - he was afraid of risking a part of his stack for a raise wit crap... but the holecards doesn´t matter. he paid 1BB for the flop. Pot is 2BB. he has no information about the strength of his opponents hand. if he didn´t hit the flop for a monster, he´s in trouble. he has to make a continuation bet now. this will cost him two more BB and he now has invested 3BB in a pot he didn´t know how to play...

ofc he couldn´t choose any other line than bet/fold and ofc he has a bad feeling about this. If anyone is playing against me this line when I´m sitting in BB I will do a 3bet, shove him out and take the blinds. easiest blind protection ever.

so what should he do? - easy to answer. he shold take the 3BB which will cost him the line he normally choose and put it on a raise preflop! in case of reraise - fold. u only lost the 3BB and ur not in trouble. most times u will earn the blind. in case of a call by BB u have the infoormation that he holds a hand which is in his range for a prefloprace...

I hope you understand that limping in this situation is for fishes only...

So be a shark. play aggressiv and grow rich! good luck @ the felts
