WPT Finds New TV Home For Season 7!

Jul 19, 2008 6:32 am Report Abuse

For the first five seasons, the World Poker Tour has aired on the Travel Channel. The WPT on Traven revolutionized televised poker with the introduction of hole card cams at the final table. Then after season five The World Poker Tour was left searching for a new TV home for season six. That is when GSN picked them up for one season. With High Stakes Poker no longer being taped for GSN it was rumored that the WPT would not be picked up for the seventh season by GSN, and that is indeed the case.

Tonight was the first final table for season 7, the Bellagio Cup, and it was there that the big announcement would be made that Fox Sports Net would be the new home of the WPT for it's seventh season.

(from pr-inside.com)

WPT Enterprises, Inc. (NASDAQ:WPTE) and Fox Sports Network (FSN) announced today a partnership and broadcast license for Season VII of the World Poker Tour(R) (WPT) television series. FSN, the nation's leading provider of local sports, received exclusive rights to air 26 all-new one hour WPT episodes in the United States across its national sports cable network. "The World Poker Tour has a track record as the ultimate brand name in televised poker," said George Greenberg, FSN Executive Vice President of Programming and Production. "FSN is very happy to televise such quality content and we look forward to future programming opportunities with the WPT."

So, WPT on FSN, a good thing or a bad thing for the WPT?

I liked the WPT on the travel channel, Im not such a big fan of FSN, I only watch it occasionally for sports highlights. Although I do think the WPT will get more exposure on FSN, I personally would prefer it on the travel channel - but that's just me.

But I guess in the end poker is poker, so I guess it won't matter what network it's on, the diehard WPT fans (me included) will still tune in.
