I NEED HELP

Jul 18, 2008 5:54 am Report Abuse

I have been told that I am a solid player. I play premium hands for the most part and have loosen up my starting hand requirement, but still cant seem to consistenly cash.

I make the final table a lot, and spend a lot of time in games as the chip leader till.......

All of a sudden I will get a very agressive player on my table and at the same time I seem to go card dead. Cant get any face cards, no pairs and not even suited cards.

I have done some extensive reading on the site and some poker books about increasing my agression factor.

I use a tool called tournament indicator that tells me the group value of the cards I have, the ev value, pot and win odds and analysis of the players on the table, but can't seem to use this information like I should.

Is there anyone out there that can lead me to where I can get more information on agression and what hands to consider using.

I try to play position and defend my big blinds, but with the cards I get and the flop that comes, it seem hopeless.

I'm in the same boat. Rose...and I aint talkin' about a fullhouse either. LOL The difference is, you have maintained solid play. My game seems shredded at the moment. I'm trying so many different ways to succeed, that sometimes I forget what I'm doing. I know that my game has gotten progressively worse.

I'll be watching this blog for the same answers you seek.

Rosie,

Cash 1 out of ten tournaments, you'll be OK. I mean cash, talking first place.

Online poker is different from real poker but I don't if you play live?

What I do know is that you are a solid player that should keep pecking away.

Take care!

Come on folks, 44 people have looked at blog and there is no one out there that has any advice.

Please help me.

KevGuy Jul 18, 2008 7:41 am

hmmmm, I have the same problems. But, defending the big blind isnt one of the answers I think. It sounds like your a good player, im sure you will figure it out.

I wish I could help ya Rose, I just dont know.. I feel like I play a pretty good game, and it seems like time after time i run into the same stuff as you, an aggressive player, etc.. either that or I am constantly getting donked on... so if you find out, let me know lol..
cj28000 Jul 18, 2008 7:48 am

rose you play solid poker that is normally the best way to cash in games sometimes they run for you sometimes they dont as long as you are making good choices as you play that is all you can do the best time to get aggressive is normally close to the bubble but allways use position.

against aggressive players i dont tend to call alot unless i am trying to trap with big pairs other wise i reraise with ace 10 and above k q if i got position

if you change your game you could end up making it worse abit like me lol

have a look at this and see if it can help you i am not sure but it might

I WISH I COULD HELP YOU ROSE.

I HAVE BEEN ON THE TABLES WITH YOU AND KNOW YOU ARE A GOOD SOLID PLAYER.

WHEN IM CHIP LEADER AND MY CARDS GO DEAD, ALL I CAN DO IS BE PATIENT AND WAIT IT OUT, IF I GET GOOD CARDS AND DONT CONNECT WITH THE FLOP I FOLD THEM.

YEP GET RID OF THE TOOLS

topcat1954 Jul 18, 2008 8:33 am

Positional play will help thru the times of no cards, remember, it isn't what you have that counts, it is what your opponents think you have, that counts !....Get ahold of pokerchix, she knows how to use that tool you have !

.....Tc.....

i wish i could give u some solid advice. listen to topcat and sin and GCrafty and lol. I my self just go by gut instinct, i have never read a book, heck i don't even know what pot odds are or bother counting how many outs i have. I just pay attention to players. feel them out. i don't know if this is good advice or not, but i have been doing pretty good lately. gl razor

Rosie,

try playing a lot of Sit n Goes. These will help teach you Final Table poker. It sounds like you have just gone past Phase 1 in poker. Phase 1 is where you understand the game well and you understand position and understand your cards. Your next level is to better classify players. Know which ones have the ability to lay down a hand and which ones over play their hand.

You might also watch the small ball Poker series by Negraneau on You tube....Brilliant.

SHERRY524 Jul 18, 2008 11:21 am
I dont handle that well myself. I have learned to open my game up more on the final table sometimes that backfires. Good luck to you.
limper Jul 18, 2008 12:22 pm
hi rosie the key word is patience if you fond that ur getting card dead and have a gd lead i suggest trying to steal a few blinds on the way maybe by raising 2n half times the blind see what sort of reaction u get but dont go over board sometimes when you seem card dead its because you are only lookign to pay middle to preium hands try some small ahnds and maybe the run will egt back to you it can be hard at the top but really all you need is patience gl and write me if you ahve any luck yabba dabba dooo
larry1dart Jul 18, 2008 8:26 pm
Don't play a hand at the final table unless you plan to play it to the felt. Play your position over aggressive and also your middle pairs need to be played hard. Don't be afraid to bust out at the final table, it is only one person who wins and just like on TV it is usually the aggressor who wins because they force other people to make decisions. GL!!

1) go all in with PP anything under 7

2) always play 82 os on fooltilt

3) fold all PP

4) never play suited cards

5) never play connectors!!

I love giving advise, so here ya go...

First, get out of your own head. Stop over thinking things. Take one lesson at a time. To be frank, you're description of an aggressive player coming to the table and then going card dead, happens to all of us from time to time. If you notice this is when you 'shut' down, then atleast you have pinpointed an area to work on. The great thing about over-aggressive players is that eventually you will get a hand to take them down with - and they will walk right into it - until that times comes, don't spend your energy being intimidated. You can't lose chips if your not in a hand with them.

Moving on to finding your aggression with less than cards... look for weak spots to win small pots. Where are your tight players...find them and casually pick small pots off them. Position is great yes, but there is also somehting to be said about making a play a little out of position (because it doesn't look like a play, it looks like you have a hand).

One more thing, don't spend too much effort protecting blinds. There are a lot of great articles by pros who highly suggest against protecting blinds. Those chips are gone, they are the pot's chips. You can make up for lost blinds in other hands. It is obvious within 18 hands who the players are who protect blinds and it makes it easy to get played back at.

But really the bottom line is about what kind of story you are telling your opponents. Make the desicion to take down a pot - think about how you would play the hand if you had aces and just play it that way.

(Also, if you are playing live, you need to get your body tells in check.)

I never answered the blog because I don't know the answer. That's probably what there is more viewers than there are answers. I'm waiting for the answers to, but hate to fill up the page with no answer responses. That's why I never answered, since you asked.
larry1dart Jul 19, 2008 12:36 am
Yeah ButtonDog I wrote my answer basically the same as my blog describing FT play in the big buy ins. It seems like the people that do well are like my blog says. GL!!
