First Live Tourney

Jul 14, 2008 3:52 pm Report Abuse

I am playing in my first Live Tournament on Friday. $100 buyin with about 50-60 people is the usual turn out. I am very excited and nervous. Any last minute advice is welcome.

Just play your game and it will be fine. The first time I played a live game, everyone was great showing me the ropes. Best of luck to ya...........

Stay focused. If you started playing online first (I actually played live before ever playing online) then you might be bored with the pacing and the slower action (since each hand takes much longer and you are using actual chips). It isn't really a problem for me because I talk a lot at the table. This helps keep me occupied, but can also gain you important pieces of information.

Also pay attention to physical tells. Watch how people announce their calls, bets and raises (it'll often vary based on their hand strength). Watch at how they stack their chips. Loose players tend to make more random stacks and tighter players tend to make more structured stacks.

Believe it or not, you will often start to feel what people are doing. You will start developing a sense for when players are strong or bluffing. This goes beyond physical or verbal tells, and it is something that you can't get online (at least I can't). It's just a feeling in your gut. Trust it.

I know you will kiss ass. Good luck and take it down!

Play position and raise with premium hands. Use check raise if you feel weakness in your opponent. Do not allow the blinds to chip away at your chip stack. Keep an eye on the other opponents for tells, like excessive blinking, tapping cards or leg movement. Wear shade if your poker face is to readable. Oh yeah, GOOD LUCK! X
