PLO coach.

Jul 9, 2008 7:11 pm Report Abuse

Hey Everyone,

I'm looking for a student to teach PL Omaha High to. I've played thousands and thousands of hands over the past couple of years, read books, article and blogs and have gotten pretty good at it- though the experience of playing is the best way to learn. Your probally saying, "Why do you want to teach it to someone else?" Well, there's a few reason for doing this. 1) I love the satisfactory of helping someone else improving there game, 2) By watching someone new I can see common mistakes they make and improve my game even further. 3) Eventually I would like to make it a profession to teach others how to play. I love poker and want to make it my life!! Basically, I'm trying to get a little experience under my belt so I can put the third one into action. So as for the student, there getting a FREE service or a fee of a small donation if they wish- but is by no means required.

I prefer the student be fairly new to the game of Omaha, but will take on someone with experience. For right now, I do not prefer tagging with the student- or playing along side the student, because I would prefer to just coach. Also, I would ask that you be willing to play at low stakes to learn, and I prefer to teach you on a well-known website such as Fulltilt, Pokerstars or Doyles Room etc. Also, have Yahoo Messenger for easy communication.

So if you interest in learning or furthering you game in Omaha, please feel free to pm me and let me know. If you read this blog and are not interested, I ask that you please post the comment "bump" so I can find those interested in learning the game.

Good Luck to everyone at the tables and have a good day!

Update:

I did get one student, N.E.R.D-that's reference to his name not his intelligence. I worked with him for a couple hours and he has done quiet well. He managed to more than double up his money in his first session. He is really picking up on the tips and information that I have given him. WAY TO GO N.E.R.D.!

I have another student interested and hope to be working with them in the near future.

About colluding- In no way shape or form did I say I was going to use a messenger to ask people for there whole cards in this blog. And when I was working with my first student, N.E.R.D, I never one time asked him what his whole cards was. As far as a response from the poker sites about coaching, this is the response I recieved from fulltilt.

Hello John,

Thank you for contacting Full Tilt Poker Support.

When websites offer poker coaching, they are not referring to while the hands are in play. Poker coaches assist players in analyzing their play using statistical tracking programs such as PokerTracker or PokerOffice. Using these programs players can view hundreds of different statistics gathered from a database of their own hand histories. Poker coaches assist players in finding holes in your game, and help you develop the skills necessary to improve your game. Should any poker coach assist players while they are playing, this would be in direct violation of the aforementioned site rule, and would not be tolerated.

I hope this clarifies some things for your John.

On behalf of Full Tilt Poker, I wish you the best of luck at the tables. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Regards,

Tom

Hope that clears things up with everyone!

I just posted a blog about being a Poker Coach!!! I will let you know how this turns out for me and will let you know if this company is worth the time. If so they might be interested in your coaching skills!

Well,

I have an 'ethics' question about this.

If you're going to coach someone who is playing in a cash game (regardess of the amount of $$) using Messenger, isn't that considered a form of collusion?

As an example, I would point to Jamie Gold and Johnny Chan. Imagine Johnny sitting next to Jamie at the WSOP and giving him instructions while the play goes on. That certainly would not be permitted.

Although the circumstances may be different, it's still the same principle involved. The game of poker is an 'individual' game and using 2 minds to discuss possible hand possibilities and betting strategies while play goes on is grossly unfair to the other players at the table.

Papa -

Online cannot be compared to live in this aspect. This is what makes online poker great as a teaching tool. The sites cannot possibly monitor what goes on from player to player. If I were to teach a friend poker one of the first things I would do is enter a tournament and let him see the action going on. The sites even admit in their list of rules that they can't prevent this sort of 'collusion' (I think that's the wrong word - collusion should be limited to two players at the same table taking advantage of being able to communicate, not two players playing as one player).

Also... bump.

PapaPower Jul 9, 2008 9:02 pm

I don't know if collusion is the right word or not. It does seem to fit the broad description that is being used by the site administrators, though.

You say we can't compare online to live in this aspect. I very strongly disagree. This is where honesty and integrity come into play. It's pretty easy to toe the line in live play because you are being watched. Where it's online, I prefer to rely on my morals and integrity to keep me honest. Just because I can't be seen doesn't mean that I don't have to follow the same rules as live play.

If you believe that the practice of coaching someone via ANY communications method while playing online for $$ is not against any rules, then perhaps someone would care to explain Rule # 5 at Full Tilt to me. Here is the link:

http://www.fulltiltpoker.com/siteRules.php

This is their rules, not mine. And all other sites have similar rules in place.

In order to clarify this issue, I asked MonsterNuts to write to support at any of the sites and ask them if this is permitted and then post the reply in this blog. Then there would be NO question whether it is permitted or not.

Bump bump bump
bwarlitner Jul 9, 2008 9:38 pm

while they don't clearly state it, i believe Rule #5 is referring to other players at the table (players) and anyone watching the action at the table (observers). the wording makes it sound like they are referring to chat in the Chat Box, but this is only my interpretation of the rule.

Dricky Jul 9, 2008 9:42 pm
It seems to me that rule #5 is talking about discussing it inside the tables chat window where telling what cards you mucked could and would change the way that people play.

For example, you fold a 45 pre-flop and the flop comes 5,4,5 , if you go into the chat and tell them that you had the nuts it would change the way people played. Ofcourse there is always the possibility that they wouldn't believe you, but any decent poker player would never tell everyone what cards they folded.

Not saying anything about the moral implications tho. I myself believe that using an IM program to talk to a coach or another player on the table should be considered cheating, but like he said there is no way for them to stop this from happening.
PapaPower Jul 9, 2008 10:25 pm

Now, you see THERE'S the problem.

EVERYONE and their mother gives their OWN interpretation of rules. WHY??? They are not YOUR rules. They belong to the poker site. If you believe they mean something other than what is posted or you're not sure, email them and ask. They WILL reply. Or are you afraid that they will tell you what you DON'T want to hear?

Here's another rule from Poker Stars to back up my belief that this 'online coaching' is wrong:

"Poker is an individual (not a team) game. Any action or chat intended to help another player is unethical and is prohibited. Unethical play, such as soft-play and chip dumping, may result in penalties, including seizure of funds from the offender's account and/or termination of the account. "

Very clearly stated. ANY action or chat intended to help another player (your student) is prohibited.
