how do you react?

Jul 4, 2008 11:15 pm Report Abuse

I think one the most posted subjects is bad beats ..

I think the real question about my game on bad beats is .. how do I react to it?

I've learned, in life, when I get mad at someone its because of a flaw I have that I dislike, or people aren't acting the way I think they should.

What kind of game would it be if everone played by the book?

that is a good question, imho... I don't think I react well in those situations. In a live game if I get angry I will get up and walk around. Maybe even be like the rest of the mindless monkeys and blow some money on the slots for a while and then come back. Online I will either sit out for a minute or two or talk crap..lol. Most of the time it is the last one. That is something I personally feel I really need to work on. To be honest it is good when people make mistakes.... it just sucks when they pay off.

It's just a game and I see no reason to get upset over a game. The game isn't over until it's over and the same with a hand. Anybody that goes into a hand with a 99% chance of winning, gets beaten, and then gets upset shouldn't be playing poker. They don't understand the game.

Well, bad beats come and go, they are part of the game. Personally my reaction is one of silence or if I feel it's warranted to tell the other player "nice catch" or "good hand".

I've seen a lot of really stupid, low percentage bets pay off for a lot of people who quite frankly have no respect for the odds. I've had people call huge bets after the flop and before the turn even though they needed runner runner to make any sort of a hand, when the odds were completely stacked against them and such a call could only be considered "moronic" by anyone who plays a great deal of poker.

However, you must consider two things, first, if you tell the other player that it was a bad idea to make such a call, how will that help either them or you? The other player isn't going to acknowledge that they just got incredibly lucky, and they probably won't change there playing style. After all, they won the hand - to them their decision was "right" no matter what you might say. Granted, in the long run they will lose a lot more hands that way than they will win, but your dealing with a "fast food" mentality here. Instant gratification is all they understand.

So trying to teach them to play better poker is a waste of time. So, if you just can't bring yourself to offer congratulations the best thing to do is just remain silent. Take the bad beat in stride, and realize that in the long run the player that won that hand will likely lose everything they gained and then some later on by trying the same stunt.

These sort of players have been around since poker began and they will still be around long after were all gone. So when it comes to situations like this I just ask myself the following questions:

1. Did I get my money in on a good hand that should have paid off?

2. Could I have played it differently and made the other player fold, or was I too passive?

If I can answer yes to both of those questions, then I know I did my best and I can be happy with that. I read the situation properly, played the hand properly, I just got beat by a lucky draw. It happens.

Getting angry at someone who is also playing poker is not a good thing, although we all do it, Yeah,.. do your best to realize that without them, there would be no game,.. we need each other, neh?,.. we are all poker players together in a world that does not understand us,.. Tryyyyyyy, to see that you would have played the way your opponent did if you had her/his cards,..

Gl to all on and off the felts,.. Railbirds card: Qh

The ONLY thing that really bothers me is when someone continuously calls large bets and chases all the way to the river and beats you with that 'miracle' card.

Yeah, I know. It happens all the time. But then the person believes they are a GREAT player and call you a Donk for making the bets to begin with, even though they are aware that you clearly have them dominated.
