For heaven's sake someone explain this to me before I explode. 35 os in the SB with a bunch of limpers behind? I can't even think of an explanation...put him on a blown AK or high pair, reraised on the turn to see where I was at (planning to fold if he reraised all in) and then the 10 on the river made me think my hand was good (maybe JJ, but anything else?)

SO WTF?

He raised his BB and every flat called. He bet his open ended and again, just got callers. He hit his open ended before you decided to raise with your pocket 10s. BB special for him.

River was a set up by good ole FT lol. Better Luck next time.

Looks like he made a play for the pot preflop because everyone acted weak. Raising pre may have prevented this from happening. When they got the open ended str8 draw on the flop, they bet and you just called. After they made their hand the tipoff should have been the min. bet. They just wanted to see if they had someone. When the river hit they knew they had you and you should have been worried about an all-in from a blind with that board. It was pretty easy for you to lose your chips hitting that set, but didn't the J have you worried at all with the guy betting on the flop? Sometimes people make a move and get a good flop, which is why raising preflop is mandatory in that situation. I think the guy was a little worried that you might be on a flush draw, but maybe you should have been worried about that too. If it was me, I def woulda raised pre with a a few limpers in front of me. Too bad it was the first hand, that really sukks. GL!!

that hands luck kicking you in the face on the end

With so many limps - the BB tried to buy the pot pre-flop with no regard for what his cards were. (You should have raised with 10's in your position imo)

Then he actually caught a very good flop for his hole cards. So he bet again to protect his hand. At this point, you should be very curious as to what he could have? After the way you played it pre-flop - I would either re-raise here or fold - no way calling is good here - you have gained no additional info on where you stand by just calling $240.

Now, after what I believe to be misteps by you so far (calling the blinds, calling the preflopp raise and again calling the flop). You should now get a pretty good indication that he has a strong hand on the turn - (where he is just trying to keep the betting limited until he is certain that his straight is the nuts and there is no flush or other possibilities) when he calls your (finally) big raise!

Finally, no way can you call an all-in bet with that board and the betting that has occurred! Its just not worth it at this early stage.

Going forward, you must understand that calling is RARELY the right play. In this hand scenario you had a chance to walk away from this and just as much as you had to take it down before it reached catastrophic levels!

These are exactly the types of hands that you need to reflect on to improve future perfomance.

Good luck, have fun and be safe out there!

raise preflop, limping here is horrible. you're giving yourself exactly the 2 T's to win, and you got your money in way behind here. There is nothing wrong with his play here. Raising the turn to see 'where you are' is so rarely a good play. make it 250 pf and then bet the flop hard, re-evaluate on the turn. as played, fold the flop.

The big blind tried to pick up the pot pre-flop. It didn't work because of two callers.

He got a very nice flop and didn't want to get raised out of his drawing hand so he made a nice sized bet hoping nobody raised so that he got the correct price for his draw.

He hit his draw on the river and made a post oak bluff, getting one hand to bite. Then on the river he pushes, hoping you were pot commited.

I actually think he played extremely well. He has a good grasp of stategy and math.

Can’t really add to what has already been said.

  • You limped, allowing the BB to attempt a steal
  • The steal did not work, but he flopped an open ended.
  • You justly did not raise the flop as there was a J on the board.
  • The turn made his straight and he ate you up.
  • Sorry to say, this was your bad, and a gutsy move on his part to start the tournament.

Only thing you can do there is go get a pair of pliers and twist that hook out of your mouth. The guy played you perfectly and you allowed it. To prevent that in the future, reraise preflop. He probably would have folded.
MichaelJoseph Jun 20, 2008 10:51 pm
i doubt he would have folded the open ended draw...no matter what you did. but you should have raised preflop.
