POKER IS GAMBLING? GAME OF CHANCE VS. GAME OF SKILL:

Jun 16, 2008 2:26 am Report Abuse

In our defense, what opinions do you fellow birds have on the subject of gambling in reference to poker?

I mean, gambling is a sin, yet my pastor plays poker...

I usually begin my defense with the fact that although the house takse a rake, i am playing the other players, not the casino... and i can control/minimize the "chance" factor through disciplined decisions and risk management... unlike craps or roulette...

Poker is a game of skill, that's my defense.
JOEACES Jun 16, 2008 2:33 am
poker is a skill game....but even if people consider it "gambling",who are they to judge?
skitmoney Jun 16, 2008 2:34 am
if u say there is no luck in poker....u must be playing a different game......luck serves a role in how the game pans out but in the long run poker is a game where skill will prevail and make you money. Any donkey/fish/whatevrcan win a tourney on a given day but can they consistently put up results?...(i hate these names...evryone is a player of the game no matter how they play) ...these people are the ones who bring money to the game for "the sharks".

poker is a game of skill, however online poker is more like bingo sometimes
tripps747 Jun 16, 2008 2:39 am
i say online it a chance/ luck but live ur gambling and it takes skill but either way its gambling. and im not even going to say anything about the church thing cause u really dont want to know my opion there......
mr.d.carter Jun 16, 2008 2:42 am

ok my "opinion" if u are playing tournaments u r not really gambling its more of a sport i mean when u get in any other tournament ur gonna spend $ on things u need to compete so that covers that now when u sit down at a ring game ur totally gambling because u could lose ur shirt ive seen it happen where ppl say im only going 2 take this much 2 the table then u turn around and the BR is gone so there u have it from my perspective

gl on the felt and remember

IRTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mr.d.carter Jun 16, 2008 2:45 am

when i said other tournaments i meant other than poker

JamAndScram Jun 16, 2008 2:47 am

interesting feedback indeed, but probability (a.k.a. luck) is a part of any game that uses dice or a "dealing/drawing" factor like cards or dominoes... compared to chess or checkers which you have complete control of your decisions...

taighan Jun 16, 2008 2:48 am

depends on the players at the table ,$1000 tourny

[with a table full of donks = better chance

wlth a table full of class players = skill and luck

Life is a gamble. Poker is gambling, when you win it's a game of skill and when you lose it's a game of chance.
topcat1954 Jun 16, 2008 2:55 am

Gambling is when you consistantly go against the odds ! Smart poker players only play when the odds are close to even or in their favor, that is the difference, and the reason most poker players are profitable long term, and gamblers are not !

........play on ........Tc.........

Poker is both... a good player gambles when it will pay off in the long run (which qualifies as skill) or simply when he/she wants to. There are times when there is pure gambling involved but you should be aware of those situations and not take them every single time... but only when they can a ford to.

playing the lotto is a game of chance. When playing the lotto yu have no control in the outcome.

In poker however, you can actually win even if you don't have the best hand. Decisions and making the correct plays is the difference between winning and losing. There is some luck involved but skill makes it so that you always make plays that increase your chances and decrease your gambles.

Luck is a factor in every single game played from poker to baseball to cribbage etc. Even in sports games where skill is paramount there are times when a playeer is skilled though in one particular play he is unlucky and slips and falls allowing another player (maybe less skilled) to score. Luck plays a part in everything each of us does in life.

When a person first starts playing poker at the beginning that person should actually improve the more he plays. If it were all luck then improvement would be a moot point eh? The simple fact that people actually improve their game, gain greater understanding is proof that there is skill involved, the higher one's skill level the more successful that one tends to be, just like in every other game played anywhere.

Peace

as fun as the game is, POKER IS GAMBLING. EVERY HAND YOU PLAY IS A RISK. yes it requires skill, but mostly luck. skill can take you a long way, but u can be the best player in the world, and still lose b/c of luck.

Woodie Jun 16, 2008 3:08 am

Poker is absolutely a game of skill. Even though online sometimes seems like a bingo game, a skilled well disciplined player will come out ahead in the long run. It is no more a game of chance than golf, and anyone who tells me golf is not a game of skill has never played the game.

Playing poker is Gambling nomatter what but in every hand and ever game u have the opportunity to choose when to gamble. if u go allin with 7-2 yeah thats real gambling, ur tryin to get lucky period. If u go in with a bigger hand, a made hand such as Q-Q or such yeah of course ur still gambling but ur odds are alot alot better.. Depends on how u look at gambling I guess.. If ur playin poker ur gambling nomatter what but it is up to u to bump ur game up and put it on the level of skill or luck. Sure u can have a run of good cards and u can have a run of bad cards but overall it's up to u, percentages and odds. U are the one that determines if u wanna play ur A-A or 7-2. I guess that there is my opinion and thats how I feel. Gl to u all in life and at the tables!

Wasn't aware I needed a defense. Poker is a game of skill, nothing left to say I think.

Johnnyarms1 Jun 16, 2008 6:05 am
Hey, here is a thought. I would put entry up for a volleyball tourney in the summer. many of them.to win the big prize pool. Whats the difference in poker tourneys? Oh , because it includes playing cards lmao. they better make volleyball, bowling, dart, and all other tourneys illegal then!
Johnnyarms1 Jun 16, 2008 6:06 am
that also goes w 1st comment about putting skill into effect!
Markie141 Jun 16, 2008 6:16 am

Poker is a game of skill ,

luck plays a factor short term but skill wins overtime ,

a skilled player can overcome a little bad luck ,

a lucky player has no chance in the long run without skill

poker players know that , gamblers don't

I always have wondered about all those bingo games and

lottos in churches though ,that's purely the luck of the draw

IMHO , in the BIble it talks about gambling in the sense

of using random picks to cast lots ,in order to make life

changing decisions about ownership of land and so on , not

exactly a harmless game of bingo or cards IMHO , gl
