Career in Poker

May 22, 2008 12:42 am Report Abuse

Alright, I've not played Poker for very long, but I very much enjoy the game and have had a thought floating around in my head for a while now.

How many instances of a career in Poker can you think of which would suit a (in 2 years time) Applied Statistics graduate? I would be happy to, as an extra year's course, study further into Game Theory... the issue here for me isn't qualification.

Like I'd already said, I haven't played Poker for a long time (Will be a year whn the new term starts), however, I enjoy thee game vry much so and would be happy to find a career which can involve it. Of course, it'd be nice to be a professional playr, and trust mee, once I've put another year's experience in then who knows I might even go for that, but for the moment I'm going to use Playsafe strategy and assume that that's not going to happen.

Does anybody have any ideas? (Or even vaguely related thoughts, I'm bored and want to talk.)

Experience is more valuable than any college class.

You should play quite awhile as an amateur before making poker your career

Certainly working on that. I'm taking it slow over the summer, and then the next erm I'll be able to play more, both online and live games. Plue there's a league at the university which I'll join for the second year.

However, aside from a career in PLAYING the game (Which I wouldn't say no to in the slightest,) are there other aspects of the game with which I could pursue a career in?

play some small live tourneys with your friends or try a casino. 1 year on the net is like 3 years live. but in live you have to play different because now your opponents can see and read you better.

good luck Jae on and off the felts

Before paying for an elecive class in game theory. Just read any book by david sklansky.

My only suggestion would be to get a part time job dealing at a local casino. Other than that I think your on the right track.. read as much as possible about it and to get to be a pro is the same way you get to Carnegy Hall, practice, practice, practice !!!
