Check raise: legitimate play or dirty poker?

May 12, 2008 1:50 am Report Abuse

I was playing in a freeroll early this morning, getting pretty deep, but the blinds were getting big and my stack was getting small. It was getting to the point where I had to make a move. I was in early position when I caught QJo. I limped in and had two other players follow me. The flop comes 10-9-8. Not wanting to give away the strength of my hand, I checked. Villain 1 checks and villain 2 bets 4K. Having 3k behind after I call his 4K I go all in. Villain 1 folds remarking it's "pretty obvious what he has". Villain 2 replies ' yeah, but I have to call ' and turns over 7-6. I was feeling pretty good about doubling up when all of a sudden this observer (who wasn't even in the tournament) starts laying into me big time, calling me ' a greedy f-n a-hole " among some choice other things. I'm like wtf? was my play that bad? This guy just wouldn't let up. Finally even Villain 1 told him to go away. I know some people have low opinons of check raises. Is it another weapon to use or is it dirty poker?

Thoughts? Opinions?

lmaoo , it's perfectly acceptable ! , I check raise whenever I feel it's the bet way to get the most money in the pot , they are under no obligation to call if they don't choose to , tell the observer to mind his own business , what's it to him ? lol GL

No such thing as dirty poker in my opinion unless you are outright cheating...

Onlysmokepot May 12, 2008 1:56 am
I use it all the time. I have never even considered it dirty poker before but can slightly see the case. I don't think the one plaer who said it is pretty obvious what he has, should be saying anthing like that when a player is still to act.

Check raise is a powerful weapon in any poker players game. Nothing dirty about it. Best weapon against over aggressive opponents after you establish you can be robbed.
Youcantfoolme May 12, 2008 1:58 am
check raise can be of an advantage and that is one that you need to use

Check raise is perfectly acceptable. Not sure what was up with the observer. Don't feel bad about doing the right thing. Good poker move/

tilt-a-kitty May 12, 2008 2:01 am

you're not even serious are you??? (about needing to ask the question).

Any play to win chips is all good,.. all fair game. Only thing I can think of that would suck is if you know you've got the nuts and you pause,.. hit your timer,.. wait awhile then call,.. when you know there's no way in hell the other player could beat you ( 'slow roll'). Just had that happen last night in $$ tourney, I'm gettin shortstacked nearing bubble, suited flop, I catch top pr. A's, I shove allin, guy to my left does the longest slowroll I've ever witnessed online,.. then rolls over the nut flush.

Check-raise,... just another way to try to eek out more chips from someone else. Person goin' off on ya was just showing everyone how little they know about poker.

How could it be dirty poker is what I want to know...It is legal as far as rules go..and isn't the point for you to win as much as possible?? If you had bet it, maybe they would have folded and you would get only a small portion of what you won. It's something I do all the time in order to get the most out a pot.

I'm with Onlysmoke when he says the other guy shouldn't have commented until the hand was over.

best of luck to you!

Who cares how you get peoples chips as long as you do... online poker isnt a friendly game at a friends house... if you don't take other peoples money they will take it from you
Two_red_Aces May 12, 2008 2:14 am

Dirty poker? No chance. You flopped the nuts he floped 2nd nuts that happens all the time! You played perfectly.

LOL Anyone else find it halarious that someone got called "greedy" in a poker tournament? I think the railer was PO'd becasue you busted his buddy or something.

Nice check raise!!!!

wow,.. I know some don't like it, but the truth is, check-raise is a big part of poker,.. without it, you are not playing poker at all, but some sort of socialist coin flips,..

I am a socialista away from the tables,.. but poker is the freest form of enterprize we have,.. corporations cannot take it over,.. it is individual effort,..

we are all individuals,..Railbirds card: Qh

I did find it pretty silly he called the guy greedy ? , it's poker , the idea is to get the most chips isn't it lol
The other guy shouldn't have discussed the hand either !

I vaguely recall reading somewhere (SuperSystem maybe?) that the slowplay and check-raise used to be dirty moves back in the day. Now, no such thing...any tool you have to get a bigger stack is pretty much fair game....just sucks to be on the losing end....I saw that in a live tourney once...guy limped with QQ and the board came 7-8-9....SB had 5-6 and the BB had 10-J....and the queens got killed...no one pissed and moaned...but what ya gonna do? it happens and you can't get pissed when you got suckered.

I completely disagree with all of the comments here.

Check-Raise is a completely HORRIBLE, DISGUSTING and COWARDLY way to play poker...................................against ME!!!!!!!!!!!

Otherwise, it's a great tool and a very legitimate play.

ButtonDog May 12, 2008 7:11 pm
Check raise is outstanding poker. I have used it and had it used against me.

In a live tournament I had 4 3 os in the big blind. I got a free look at the flop which was 4 4 3. I checked and the next better went all in. The others still in folded and I called. The guy had a look of utter disgust when we turned over our cards, but said nice play as he did his rebuy.
