Most Worthless Advice Ever

Apr 14, 2008 9:19 pm Report Abuse

Well OK, that's not true, because what I'm about to share with you at least isn't wrong; its just very poorly framed. So poorly framed that I am dying to scream out my indignation at this worthless steaming pile of, well you know.

So I found this article which claims in its title that you can make $4800/week. Then in the first sentence it states that you don't need a bankroll and you don't need to invest a lot of time.

Wow, what could this mircle possibly be?

His miracle answer to making money is to quad table 10/20 limit hold. Like I said, I don't disagree that you could expect that much money from playing that way, its just that I totally disagree with both the lack of requirements he thinks it needs and how casually he passes it off.

First of all the time; 40 hours a week may not be 50 or 60 or 100, but its far more time than anyone who is not already a poker pro likely has to invest. (I seriously doubt the article was written with poker pros in mind, considering how he speaks about very basic concepts as though the reader had never heard of them)

Second of all, the bankroll; if you are going to quad table limit poker for a living you ought to have at least 1000BB in your bankroll. At 10/20 that's $20000. I have real trouble accepting that 20K is a small bankroll. Sure it won't get you on to highstakes poker, nor will it keep you playing the tourney circuit, but its not the kind of money most people have just sitting around.

Third is the skill. If you needed to have such basic concepts explained to you as he discusses in this article, what chance do you have sitting down at a 10/20 table? None! And sitting down at four of these tables, would just be bleeding your money away that much faster.

So I guess what I'm saying is that just because he can show that this could be a reasonable expectation for someone, doesn't mean its a reasonable expectation for most people, and to imply otherwise destroys any value this article might have had.

Actually, that's a pro named Aaron Bartley. I think the article demonstrates that poker players are not necessarily good writers. I think he is wrong about 4 tabling and getting the same results on 4 that you can expect on 1. It is really difficult. The bankroll thing is an unrealistic scenario for the average player. Obviously, the old saying "if it looks to good to be true...." applies to pie the sky poker concepts too.

Good post.
