Why do people contribute to negative stereotypes?

Apr 7, 2008 6:56 am Report Abuse

I'm sitting at a 1/2 NL cash game at my local bar (let me preface this by stating that I live in Alabama, which obviously just by its location in the South gives outsiders somewhat of a stereotype), and we have a couple of out-of-towners come and sit down. Both buy-in for the average $100, and we all play a few hands 9-handed. Eventually, after about 10 hands or so, a regular, who is known for loose play, decides to re-raise a pot with absolute garbage (I believe the hand was 8 4 off). Anyhow, one of the new guys re-pops all-in, and our local hick insta-calls with his deep stack. New guy has kings, and the board bricks. After the hand, the following conversation begins:

Newbie: Why did you play that hand?

Reg.: It's just my style?

Newbie: That's just a donkey play. There's no reason you should be in that, no matter what.

Reg. (w/ wife kinda leaning on shoulder now, and about 6-8 drinks ingested): So do you have a problem with how I play? (Louder tone) We can do someting about it if you want to!

Newbie (I guess this was meant as a joke): No, No, it's ok................So, is that your cousin?

(whole table laughs)

Reg.: Let's just take this outside so I can kick your ass (never denies allegation)

Finally, the owner gets involved and calms the situation down, but the damage had already been done. My "compadre" here just set us back about 10 years. First off, for teh next hour or so,the new guys called everything, and we were given the appearance that we couldnt play, period. Secondly, the 200-year old "Hicks have incest" stereotype was just thrown out there, and we all laughed instead of getting pissed. I don't know........maybe I'm really damn tired and need to go to bed. Anyway, until later....

Something like this always happens when new people join a local game. I brought friends from college to a local game and I figured no one would mind playing with them since its just like $10-20 buy in sit n go usually and 1 & 2 collect.
The guys from college were playing fairly tight except for one who i guess didn't care if he won or lost because it was his parents money... Teach me to invite him again.

He took out 3 of the regulars with hands like J4os... against QQ. I was flustered just playing at the table with him. Because the way his luck was rolling i didnt wanna call against him and what if i did and he was holding a legit hand. eventually he got knocked out and one of my buddies made a comment about the spoiled rich kid finally lost his lucky dollar... anyways moral of the story is best to not taint something that has been good for so long !

I learned my lesson and started playing 2 different games so it wouldnt happen again.

lol he sounds like a tool, he should just sit quietly and thank the poker gods your friend wants to play 84 lol , it also never fails to amaze me how many people toss the term donkey around when in fact they are the biggest donkey at the table lmao , gl

Well to be honest i think the "is that your cousin" line is pretty humorous. The guy who said it new it would ruffle some feathers thats why he did it. And if they steam rolled the table the rest of the way it seemed to work. The only thing those guys walked out with was pockets full of twentys not minds full of stereotypes.

Actually the guy who made the comment lost 200 overall, but his buddy was up about 500 when i left about 1230 am local time. All the Newbie did was call that guy down most of the night, and the Reg tightened up and busted him once. I thought that comment was quite funny myself, but I kinda thought that some of the other guys, who looked more "Southern" than I do would take exception. It was an eventful night, no geting around that.
