Trials of a young poker player #1

Mar 17, 2008 6:18 pm Report Abuse

Recently i have been going through a rough patch playing poker live and online... I am down 3,000 dollars in two months many people know these swings happen but never have gone through them.. I was blaming alot of other factors other than my play which was partially right, but i have locked it down too a couple essential reasons for my losing..
1. Not focusing on my game and making the proper plays and bad adjustments..
2. Playing two many games drunk and not giving my competition enough credit.
3. Becoming very timid which is not a usual trait people associate with my bravado and brashness.
i explored three further and came up with sub some sections on this topic.
3a. I think my online play has effected my live play forcing me to fold the best hand alot of the times. because of not knowing the ambiguity and the capabilities of my opponents has made me more of a lamb than a lion.
3b. I'm usually more confident in my abilities but on this cash game losing streak i have become more humble which has hurt me..
3c. And frequent talks with my father is making me questions my part-time job as a poker player. Sometimes the psychological aspects of the game are over looked and he reminds me of them.. When he walks around a table i play or i talk to him a nite before a session...

Recently i've become an addict of my environment partying, drinking and a load of other things which has taking me off my game.. I'm gonna rejuvenate start working out again start reading a lot more and plunge myself back into the game full throttle charlie's angels two lmao... But if you don't see me on a lot any more just check for my blogs trials of a young poker player these will blogs will update my progress physically and mentally!!.. and to all my clan mates sorry for not being around as much...

At least you saw the lesson before it got too far. 3K is bad enough (as a single mom Id be DYING) but now you have the chance to fix it. It will happen many times where you have to reevaluate your play over your career. Just when you think you know...you don't....just watch for those lessons quicker.

Re-evaluating your game is a fantastic start in making positive changes. One that is under utilized by many players in my opinion...

I hope you get back on your game and good luck to you both on and off the tables...

i think that starting to work out again will help you much more than you think. i've heard from a few people, and i certainly believe it myself, that being in better physical shape can help improve mental functions. whether do to this or just to psychological reasons, when i stopped working out for a few months for the first time in years, my play suffered and my bankroll took a hit. and, of course, playing drunk probably isn't too good for the bankroll either. best of luck with the comeback man

Good blog.. i think it is great that you are able to notice a problem before it gets you into Monster trouble. too many people can't see a problem.
I hope we can play soon even if it's only in the freerolls.
Good luck and i hope to read a new blog soon.

If i were you id take a break from poker. I get like that and it seems like i have a bunch of hands running through my head and i end up calling with the worst hand and folding the best hand. Just take a break from poker and come back a week later so you can be refreshed

Poker is a mind game. If you let the losses get in your head, you will continue to lose. I hardly ever drink, but I can imagine what it would do to my game. I have a hard enough time sober. Gather yourself together, and let yesterday go....today is a new day.
Daisyedith Mar 18, 2008 7:31 pm

all the best to you. Noticing a problem is already the first step. Good that you have a father who cares about you.

Its always good to reevaluate your game. Get it together and keep grinding. When you fall down you need to get up with a fight. Good luck! keep us posted.
