Is poker a sport?

Mar 16, 2008 8:34 am Report Abuse

I was reading a comment on another blog, and someone said that they considered poker a sport. I am a poker junkie and love it more than almost anything else in my life, but there is no way poker is a sport. In my opinion to be a sport the competitors have to be involved in some sort of athletic activity ie: running, jumping, lifting, even dancing. So i wanna get you all's opinions. What do you think?

IMO, poker is not a sport. I mean, anything you can do while eating and drinking is definitely not a sport.

Here is a rule I always go by.
Play it at it's highest level with a drink in your hand, if you don't spill any it's a game. If you wear more of it then you drink, it's a sport.
Works for me, lol

is poker a game of skill? most definitely. but the lack of athletic ability removes it from the "sport" category. i think being in good shape can help your poker game, but poker itself is definitely NOT a sport..

if you call using your brain intellecually a sport then yes, but most of ufs would say no .

I consider Poker as a sport, and the only one I'm into together with Chess.

See, our brain stand for half the energy we're burning in our body, and in Poker you have to bring your brain too. If sports only have to do with sweating and atletic acrobatic activity, I guess 'making love' would be it, but it is'nt.. so definitions are not always the way to determind things for categories...

Chess is a sport, so if that is right, Poker is as well.. See the good part in it, from now on, you don't have to run around or doing anything unnatural to trying to be sporty, You can just take your favorite chair, your favorite drink and a game of poker... Thata reel joggin...

Poker is MOST definitely a Sport!!!,.. it takes mental alertness and mental agility,.. people who play a lot of poker rarely get alzheimers or other senility based dis-eases,..

In Canada it is listed as a sport by the gov't, that's why private games are legal here, unlike the USA,.. anyone in Canada can play for any amount of money as long as it in a private(not viewed by the public) place and there is no rake-off,..

I don't understand why people say it isn't, if sport always involves sweating, then sex is a sport, sorry, don't think so, fun but not sport!..

Chess is a sport and so is golf and so is POKER!,.. Why do you think it is played on all the sports channels?, d'uh,..

thank you,.. and Good Morning,.. Railbirds card: Qh

Like I said if you can play it and NOT spill your drink it is NOT a sport. come on if we call everything that makes you use your brain a sport then reading , writing , and math are sports.
DanishPal Mar 16, 2008 11:57 am

Ironman is in to something here...

SURE Math is a sport, why else would they compete in it ???

Ironman Mar 16, 2008 11:59 am
LMAOOO you got me there
Rowanlea Mar 16, 2008 11:59 am
So then golf is not a sport, because you don't spill your drink???,.. strange logic,.. Railbirds card: Qh
saramin Mar 16, 2008 12:04 pm

Like sports its a competition. There are Scrabble Championships,Spelling Bees, even Dominoes on sports T.V..

I'm going to with it being a competition. ( like a gun duel )

Rowanlea Mar 16, 2008 12:09 pm
And remember fans, if you can't play sports,.. at least you can be an athletic supporter!!!,.. Railbirds card: Qh

I don't know about the rest of the US states but in Texas you can play for any amount of money as long as it is in a private(not viewed by the public) place and there is no rake-off,.. I know this because I sometimes get invited to a real game that is mostly police. When I ask them if we were all breaking the law one laughed and said not if there's no one taking a rake.

If you were my neighbor and peering in through my window just as I KO'd two players from my table as we approached the bubble,..... then YES, you would consider it a sport (quite possibly all things mentioned above in orig. blog 'running, jumping, lifting,... .and YES, even dancing'.

Am I a 'good sport' while playing??? Only if I'm winning, or if I'm outplayed. If I'm sucked out on then NO,... it is not a 'sport'.

yumboltking Mar 16, 2008 1:12 pm

MATHletes are HOT!!!!!!

FullRudy Mar 16, 2008 1:20 pm
I would agree that poker is a game, not a sport...and for whomever said you can golf without spilling your drink, I'm trying to picture that...maybe if you're wearing one of those beer helmets, but otherwise I don't think so...most golfers use both hands to swing ;-) I love poker as much as anyone else, but it is only a game.
nomad7 Mar 16, 2008 1:47 pm
2 me poker is a GAME of skill and knowlegde with a little bit of luck left*lol*
