yet again another dumb quiz answer.. all in middle position with J7 off suit? being ITM or not it doesn't matter, that's a terrible hand to go all in with anytime.

go all in and lose to a high card ace or something. brilliant move.

lmao, 4 real lol. duh yea ok
Schiesse Mar 4, 2008 2:04 am
i take that back.. wasn't paying attention to the blinds.. etc.

4 orbits you will last but even then that's enough time to hit a better hand and at least a K9 or maybe A 8, something better than J7.

It's not always about the cards in your hand when you are short stacked. It's about playing position and trying to make a move to win the blinds so you can at least survive one more round.

This question was from mid position, and after a bit of coaching from a close friend of mine (a couple months ago), I will go in from mid-postion with any paint, pair or A if I am at less than 10M.

At less than 10M, you dont have much choice left. You have no fold equity and you don't have enough chips to actually play a hand to get someone to fold, unless you push in.

damn right smiley. it's all about position and the situation. you cannot afford to wait for a better hand. you are about to lose fold equity. you need to scoop those blinds and antes.
it's not about your cards, it's about the hands the others will need to call you.
you wanna wait for a better hand while you get blinded out?
that's not winning poker.
intsapush.

it's about going all in with at least a better hand than J7 off suit.. with 4M remaining you are more than likely to hit a better hand to push with.
Onlysmokepot Mar 4, 2008 2:39 am
what is fold equity? I have heard of it but never really realize what it is. I think it might be the low chips you have if you get pushed back on after raising and a forced to call with any two cards?
nsandman Mar 4, 2008 2:43 am

Who ever comes up with these questions and the answers is a moron, I dont care what position your in, If your ITM, or if you are short stacked J 7 os is just a plain stupid hand to go all in with.

watchdog26 Mar 4, 2008 2:47 am
I do beleive you can wait for a better hand. You have at leat 2 more hands to go before you go under 8k in chips. I think you can wait at least another 2 or 3 hands before pushing. IMHO anyways.
Sandman-Michael Mar 4, 2008 2:57 am
it's a mad mad mad world. Hell yes you wait for a better hand.
sqrltyler Mar 4, 2008 3:17 am
we can all have different opinions, that's what makes the world go round, but dan harrington is pushing all in here, and it's safe to say he's a more successful player than any of us.
you can wait for a better hand, before you have to post another bb, but with more players to act behind you, the is a greater chance of coming up against a real hand.
Onlysmokepot here's a blog on 'fold equity';

It's not always about the cards in your hand when you are short stacked. It's about playing position and trying to make a move to win the blinds so you can at least survive one more round.

it's all about position and the situation. you cannot afford to wait for a better hand.

Since everyone else has already bashed the quiz to hell and back, I thought I'd say why I thought these defenses of it are wrong.

First of, it absolutely is about position and situation. The situation is that you just made the money, and that means that there are going to be some players that are going to shove or call all-in much more loosely than usual (ie. other short stacks who've been folding their way into the money). The position is middle, which is a sub-optimal place to make this play because you've got a whole lot of people behind you; .

Second, you can afford to wait for a better hand because J7o is such a weak hand that even if you only have two deals after this one before the blinds you will have a very good chance of getting a better hand in those deals.

If the position was late or the hand was king high instead of jack high, I could see this. But as it stands I totally agree with those who feel the quiz master missed the boat.

I understand the pushing with rags concept anyone who's played with me knows I've pushed all in with 32o when the time was right but you have 5 or 6 left to act. Yes you have fold equity but your stack is big enough where it's just not profitable to push here- stealing is for late position in middle position it'd be nice to have something u dont mind a call with as much
Kandon12 Mar 4, 2008 3:27 am
yeah that is a stupid quiz answer
Smiley_Chicky Mar 4, 2008 12:33 pm

I agree with sqrltyler...You don't have time to wait for a better hand, and you have to get your chips in before the button gets too far away from you.

Also, a short stack push from mid-position says "strength" if anyone at the table has been paying a bit of attention. And this makes the "calling" hand range have to go up. What hands should call a mid-position short stack push? I would think it has to be a tier one hand to make this call. Therefore, assuming you are 5th to act at a full table, there are 4 left to act. What are the chances that one of these 4 players have a better hand than you? Not very high, but it's also about table image and convincing the other players that you hold a strong hand and getting them to fold.

I will say it once again, It is not about the cards here...It's about the situation and position.

Lol Just be hounest with me , your in a WSOP tourny and you gonna risk all hard work with J7? if it was JT orso i maybe should understand this question + motivation, but J7 8k chips blinds @ 400/800 come on, i know i wouldnt.

But if you are just in the money people will call more + they will put you on weak hands to push because your low.

But if someone else think its a good move i respect that everyone his style
McSweg Mar 4, 2008 1:00 pm
fold fold fold the only answer
SwannySA Mar 4, 2008 1:39 pm
