What is the best TV poker?

Feb 17, 2008 9:19 am Report Abuse

I happen to really enjoy Poker After Dark on NBC. This week I saw one episode where I learned more about poker in 5 minutes than I did all of last year. I still enjoy watchiing the WPT and the replays of the WSOP, but they don't really compare to POD.

What is your opinion?

I like PAD a lot too, also WPT they both show more of the game,WSOP is good too because they show other games besides holdem, and I also really like High Stakes Poker ,it's just fun to watch them going nuts in a cash game lol, gl !

Poker after dark, for the sit and go format. The others on ESPN and High Stakes are edited for the time limit, dont get to see all the set ups for the big plays. I sure you wouldn't want to watch the first day of the main event wire to wire, fold, fold, fold, fold, AA raise, fold, fold...

High stakes poker has to be the best poker show.
Shiznizzled Feb 17, 2008 12:06 pm

I like Poker After Dark, and High Stakes Poker equally well. Both have from among the world's best competing against each other. Both are highly entertaining, and people can actually learn something if they're paying attention My opinion is that everyone should go to YouTube for all the episodes of each show, as well as many complete WSOP tournaments, and watch as many related poker videos as they can.

PAD is probably my favorite show because you see pretty much every single hand. On highstakes they edit but is probably a little more entertaining because Doyle is always there Daniel is ther emost of the time i mean the big names are always there. PAD has dumb stuff like ladies week those shows suck so much, they dont always have a great lineup but any show that has Phil Hellmuth is always good. Id rather watch wpt on travel channel than any ESPN WSOP coverage. There is a new show with Phil Hellmuth and Annie Duke on FSN that comes on at 10 or 11 pm eastern time on Mondays havent seen it yet but ima check it out tomorrow

PAD is crazy someone tell me the last time you were on an online six handed sit and go that lasts more than 7 hours lol. The blinds go up alot faster online but man that is a long time for a 6 handed game compared to online 6 handed game you go through a 6 handed 1000 person tourney faster than PAD goes through 6 players

cutler, I should probably PM you with my critical remarks about your comments on my blog, but I sadly agree with you for the most part. I think you are wrong about the Ladies Nite ***** though. I saw three of the five episodes, and I thought that the women played very agressively. Maybe too much agression. Women are much more likely to have a very competitive confrontation, and then hug each other after one loses than men are.

If I have poket K,K and you have Q, 4 on the BB and I raise 3X and all fold to you and you call, happen to catch a Q,Q 4 on the flop and string me along and I catch a K on the turn, I will shove my stack in quicker than you can say "Homosaywhat?", of course you call and catch a one outer Q on the river. I don't care how good of a friend we are! There will be no hugs and kisses from me. At least not for several hours!

cutler624 Feb 17, 2008 1:12 pm
They played well but id rather see the big name players im not saying the women players arent any good but they just arent top tier like phil hellmuth johnny chan doyle you know the big names jennifer harman is up there. I just think that the game is better with the big names just my opinion
ShowMeJohn Feb 17, 2008 1:25 pm

Well said cutler,

I respect your opinion, and I appreciate it.

I think I may have even learned something.

The next time I am at a table with a bunch of hardened pros, I will just play like a woman and when I have taken out 2 of them I will settle down and try to play like a pro too.

That can't be too hard!

The EPT is by far the best televised poker show
manx3legs Feb 17, 2008 2:23 pm

Sorry John but for excitment and continuity the EUROPEAN POKER TOUR knocks the socks off them all, even getting so now that the worlds best players are turning up week after week to compete for an ever increasing prize pool. And with 9 tours it has it all for us poker buffs!! Plenty of head to head at the tables when big name takes on big name, and then theres the online qualifiers who are so unpredictable in their play that its a battle to try and sus out what they are holding!! And characters like 'Marcel Luske' , 'Devil Fish', the wild man 'Gus Hanson', 'Gavin Griffin', 'Marc Karam', 'Phil Ivy' and that most delightful lady of poker 'Isabelle Mercier ' who I could watch all day every day!!!!! theres no better entertainment !!!!!

And with the top earners being from the USA, Canada and the UK its only going to encourage more and more top players to the EPT.

ETP will just get bigger and better!!!

The GOF.

PS good going in your poker I see, congrats!!!!!!

On TV, they are not dealing 60 hands an hour like they do online. But Live is a lot more fun to watch.
ShowMeJohn Feb 20, 2008 8:50 am

It sounds like there is some pretty good poker on TV if you are somewhere in NorthAmerica or Europe. I wish I could see it all!

I know, get a faster internet connection, and I can download it and watch it at my leisure.

Well I don't have the extra money to spend on a highspeed connection, and that's that! End of story.

I think I saw the EPT one time on the travel channel. It was interesting, but it didn't hold a candle to PAD for continuity, and especially table chat among'st the contestants.

From all of the comments, I am thinking that maybe High Stakes Poker is the most educational game on TV, but I really doubt that. The name alone gives it very low marks.

I used to get the World Poker Tour every Wednesday evening and Saturday afternoons. I guess the ratings didn't hold up, because it is no longer on TV.

I just watched a new Poker show called "The Best Damn Poker Show." It was on Fox Sports Network. I learned 2 things. First, I learned that I have no business playing poker, and second, I learned that I was really lousy when I play poker.

How is that for education?

HSP is by far the best poker if youre watching to learn, i think PAD is a little boring because blinds start so low compared to chip stacks
Markie141 Feb 20, 2008 9:14 am

I wouldn't call HSP educational it's just fun lol ,the World poker tour is still on the travel channel on wed and sat but it's moving to GSN in march , anyway a great way to watch poker is to go to pokertube , http://www.pokertube.com/

or http://youtubepoker*****/ is also good or

http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/23011821

to watch PAD anytime you want online for free , gl !

Personally I like WPT & High Stakes Poker.
ShowMeJohn Feb 20, 2008 9:49 am

Good comments from everyone who took the time to give me their opinion. I wish I could only see everything about poker that has ever been put on television. Sadly, I don't have the time or the money to buy access to everything.

If I had that kind of money, I guess I wouldn't spend my time trying to learn to play better poker. I would just play for fun.

I'm really pretty good against 93% of the novice poker players, but when I am against a skilled amatuer, or a pro, I really suck at the game.

I want to get better!

I think watching poker on TV helps some people to learn what cards to play, how to play them, and how much to bet when you happen to be holding the nut hand.

Thanks again for you comments. They were very helpful.
