poker and drinking

Feb 9, 2008 3:42 am Report Abuse

How do you feel about the combo?

It's not like drinking and driving. You're safe and sound at your computer, you can't hurt anyone.

Do you feel it can help?

I do. I find for me about a drink an hour helps my play ... gives just enough to make a lose call. More than that finds me out of the money.

I can't do that. 1 an hour turns into 9 an hour... and then I'm broke.

pinkk_taco Feb 9, 2008 4:04 am

Sometimes....it may loosen me up to make a call/bet/raise that I might not otherwise consider.

And it tastes good too, LOL !

Around Christmas I tried about the same plan. (my play was 2 an hour) Did pretty good in the freeroll but by the second break I was wishing Merry Christmas blogs to ever railbird that had left a blog in the last week... I'm a happy drunk...ha Went to bed with a headache and dreamed about typing...Tough night...ouch

Drinking while you play always a good idea. It loosens you up and if you loose you just brush it off and drink untill you forget about it lol. I drink all the timew while a play and i do fine. I also smoke a bowl before and at each break and it calms me down loosens me up and i enjoy the game that much more.

It helps for awhile. 2-3 beers deep and I suddenly get pretty good. Anymore and it's usually a quick exit.

Here are my thoughts. After 300 tourneys, I am about sixty bucks ahead. However, I play the dollar sngs when I am drinking or come home from the bar, lol. My roi on the dollar sng's is about minus 50% lol. This tells me that drinking and poker doesn't mix too well.

Wait a minute...I'm confused. Do you mean to say that some players actually interrupt their normal drinking schedule in order play the game more efficiently?

Wow!!! I never thought of that! You see, this is why I love this site; you learn real, inside stuff about poker you just can't get anywhere else.

I just take two strong pain pills before the tournaments. Maybe thats why I get to tired to play.
smkey Feb 9, 2008 6:12 am

I have three drinking and poker stories - in case youre interested....

1. Player 1 and Player 2(very drunk) are in a big hand together (basement poker). They both have the same hole cards (obviously different suit). The board pairs their ace, and they both seem to know they have weak kickers (4). Player 1 bets large all the way to fifth street... Player 2 calls all the bets. On the RIver, Player 1 goes all in, Player two has about 3 dollars worth of chips left in front of him and folds. ummmm,.... this was a 70 dollar pot ... dont drink and play poker.

2. Hubby is at the casino, buys in for 400 to a 2/5 NLHE table. Plays for a few hours, drinking, having fun and winning. Builds his stack up to $2400... knows he should get up and walk away, but is having too much fun and into the beers a little too hard, wants to be greedy and double up... ha,... within 90 minutes he busts out completely.... dont drink and play poker.

3. I am playing a 100(ish) man 50 dollar buy-in NLHE poker tourney, live. I am the only woman there, a bit nervous, so I start ordering the Keith's. Yeah, ordered a lot... Anyway, by the end of the tournament, I am 3 sheets to the wind (not blind drunk but more than I usually would allow myself to get). In 20 minutes on the final table I knocked out 4 players, and was heads up, and having trouble seeing the cards. I played another half hour heads up then had my QQ cracked by A3 offsuit. Still took second, which was fine by me, considering my state... cant really say dont drink and play poker!

Anyway, those are my most memorable drinking and poker stories...

Good luck and dont wake up with a hangover!

Peace***

Don't worry Johnny, I will teach you everything you need to learn about playing poker. Where's my drink, dammit! lol.
PokerEMT Feb 9, 2008 6:34 am
Hell if Hellmuth can drink Double White Russians and Win 11 Bracelets Id dare say it cant be all bad. Its probably not a bad idea if you need something to just chill the nerves and maybe unwind you so you dont donk out but I wouldnt advise getting totally fried. I blew a chunk of my BR I had on AP one night playing cheap ring games I got ballsy had tripled my stack from start only to donk myself out at the next table losing all my gains. I think I burned 1/3 of my BR that night so I learned never to drink or drug to the point of not thinking clearly at all

Jay - As the expression goes; If you've got the time, I've got the beer...lol

RiverQueen - I heard the #1 story a little differently. The way I heard it, both players were drunk...they both stayed in...they split the pot...then they got in a fight because each claimed the other was a Donkey for playing those rags.

As far as drinking and poker goes, I think drinking should be considered the same way one considers any other mood altering element. It is difficult to say whether drinking a single beer is more deleterious to your concentration and chances of winning than is the act of taking a stressful phone call during the game.

Obviously, if one drinks to excess it will be difficult to make smart choices, but drinking moderately during play may or may not be a greater detriment than the emotional upheaval of; suffering a bad beat or arguing with your wife or listening to distracting music.

When you come right down to it, I believe all of these factors are thrown into the great big cauldron we call Poker and together with the elements of; luck and skill and insight and intuition and experience and who knows what else they bubble and boil until the final result is known. And that result is, what it is. No one can ever analyze or explain it completely.
