Making up your own story about a hand

Feb 6, 2008 3:30 pm Report Abuse

I do not necessary believe in a sixth sense but I do believe in this. When it comes to gut reactions, I believe there is a natural order our body does when it cannot completely but something together. When our minds are only able to partially put together a picture it warns our body, gut reaction, that something is wrong but it cannot figure out what it is. I believe that this happens when you are playing poker. The issue is this we cannot always convince our conscious mind what are unconscious mind is trying to tell us. So we make up our own story in our mind to fit the reality we want to see. This has happened to me yesterday in a hand with a home game. We were playing pot limit colorado holdem, this is where each person is dealt the river card down to each player. It is a fun game if you have ever played it. It is folded down to me and I raise iwth A8 suited and big blind calls the flop comes AA5 he checks I bet and he calls. There are two dimaonds out there and I think me might have a flush draw. A queen comes next and I feel it in my bones that is not a good card for me. My mind flashes, hes got AQ, my gut is telling me the same thing. But I cannot convince myself that he has that hand. Although the story on the board is unfolding like he has AQ, I decide to make up my own story and assume he has the A but a low kicker and we will probably split the pot. I think it is a common problem when people are playing poker, making up their own story when the board and their gut is telling them different. By the way he did have AQ, like my gut was telling me.

Moral of the story? According to a game I watched on Poker Stars recently, Daniel Negreneu and Greenstein were involved in, there is no such thing as math in poker, it's all about insticts. Quite a heated discussion, and I seem to agree with them.

Great post

My mind and heart are telling me to read this story because I can learn something from it!...but I can't convince myself to read past the first sentence because the poker tables are calling and the reality is... I wanna play!!!

I fought the desire to play poker and DID read the rest...and you know what??? I DID learn something! Sometimes it's better to listen than to dismiss some information!

Keep on truckin'..and those flashing lights and bells at the railroad crossing are telling you something?

I like this post..it brings up the conflict of head vs heart...brain vs. ego or whatever you want to call it. I was thinking one day about how I get knocked out of tournies and pretty well come to the following rough conclusion 20% bad hands getting short stacked and forced to push. 10% bad beat when i was sure I had the nuts and they drew out on me. 70% where I knew I was beat before I made the call but wanted to win the hand so bad I couldnt resist making the call. I blame this on some sort of ego issue where you get in that rhythm where you think you have to win every hand you play in..I know I do better in tournies where I have the sense to lay down the hands I know I"m beat at and hopefully getting better at, but sometimes it's just so dang hard to lay down that flush draw or two pair. Then have to deal with being on tilt for blowing 25% of your stack before you wisened up and folded.
