how do i step away????

Jan 22, 2008 8:21 pm Report Abuse

i think i need to learn when is enough. i have those days where i go in with the best hand and keep getting fished out. ive tried playing slower, but my opponent then out draws me.

i am curious as to what i should be telling myself, or how long should i take a break for? i know i need to step back. does that mean i shouldnt play freerolls or playchips too?

any thoughts about taking a break from my favorite game?

thanks birds, gl on the felt.

I took 3 weeks off from playing any sort of poker. It made me enjoy it that much more when I came back

Your bankroll is the determining factor. If you lose more than you can stand of it, then back away or play with the play chips. I prefer to play thru problem times, but ocasionally everyone needs to walk away when it gets really bad, for how long is the big question.

.......play on .......Tc.........

For some it's a few hours, for others, a few days break.

Stepping down is a great idea if you just can't make it work. Play chips and freerolls have only one investment - time.

GL on your re-bound...

There are lots of thing you can do, and everyone's different. What is important is to do something that COMPLETELY changes your mindset. Sometimes I jump to play chips and literally play every hand to start, then slowly tighten up till I am back to feeling confident. Other times, I play Madden on my 360 and just obliterate the Steelers - that always makes me feel good.

What you should be telling yourself is this: the more players draw out on me, the more money I will make in the long run. What you should be asking yourself is this: am I playing my best game right now, against optimal opponents for my style? Sometimes the donkeys actually rattle us just enough to allow emotions like revenge to become a factor in our play. If that is the case, we have already lost.

This, too, shall pass, my friend. We all have those days. What separates winners from losers is how we react to them. (Admittedly, I don't always do it right.)

dont take anytime off, just play lower limits to get back in your groove. and if you run into bad luck there then at least your not risking as much money.

I should stop before I lose so much, but when I am having a bad run I never let myself drop below the previous level in my bankroll. So if I am up to $80 then I don't allow myself to fall below $70 for that day. I take a break. Then if I feel like I need to play poker, I will come back and play with my play money. At least if I tilt that away it doesn't affect my bankroll.

those runs are suckfull, no doubt. When that happens at the cash tables i start from the bottom... the small 18 player sng's. 2 dollars buy-in... and be patient - play hands you like.

U gotta remember if someone sucks out or fishes then you are either making it too easy for them to do so, or they are simply fluctuations.

They key is to get your chips in with the best hand.

i think it depends on if you are just on a bad run luck wise or if it changes your attitude to the game , in the first case I just go down limits for a while probably just until the next day but play games or freerolls are a good option too if they suck out there you aren't losing anything but time , if it's changing your mood so you aren't in a good frame of mind to play then take a couple days off and relax then go back in fresh , any good player is going to get suckouts that just means you are putting your money in good , it's the bad players who never get sucked out on lol , gl !

If you feel you need a break from all the beats your taking then take a break. Daniel Negreanu says it best in his book "Holdem Wisdom for all players" that the poker table will always be there when you're ready to return. So take a break and go do something else that you enjoy to get your mind right for the next time that you take to the felt. GL and remember not to let poker get you down because in the end it's just a game and when you approach it that way I think you'll find your results will be better.

After a couple days of getting really great hands and being sucked out on terribly time after time. I didn't quit but tightened up my game a bit (maybe too tight) but it worked. Didn't raise on pp except QQ and up. AK< AQ< AJ no raise. At least early in a tourny that worked but never toward the end. Raised my confidence a bit that yeah.. those hand will win. I'm not telling you to follow that....but it worked for me.

be sure to evaluate your play based upon odds and not results."

I would step back and look at my play. I wouldn't change much if anything. Maybe play some different hole cards.

I was playing only the "best" hole cards in the right position, I found I was betting too much with them. I then went back to how I used to play. 3 or 4 X the big blind, hit or git.

I went back to play chips, and built it to over 1 million. When you start going up in chips, go up in buy in. I play the 9 player sng's, the 50,000 chip buy in. Say what you want, the competition is a lot better than the micro buy ins. I don't have a bankroll big enough to buy in a real good tourney.

I have started to play the 9 player sng's buy ins also. I was playing them with success and for some reason stopped. I started at the 1.00 buy in then moved up to the 5.00 buy ins. I hope to move up again soon, I am not rushing it this time.

I also started playing boggle and scrabble. I use my mind and the game theory experience is good. That way there isn't any money on the line and you can just play.

It's hard to step away sometimes, I know.... But remember we all have bad runs that eventually turn into good runs. That's part of poker. It's a neverending circle, lol.
