Freerolls - Things to keep in mind

Jan 20, 2008 4:09 pm Report Abuse

After playing many freerolls I've made the following observations and conclusions.

1. IT IS FREE!!! Keep repeating this over and over. Free means NO RISK! Players have nothing invested so they have nothing at risk.

It will help you to understand why they do the following:

2. Play Ace - rag. suited or unsuited. (How many times has AK lost to A4 because a 4 hits on the river after AK is all in)

3. Play connected cards, suited or unsuited. (flop gives them open ended and you hit trips. guess what the river is?)

4. Play suited cards no matter what the gap is between them.(and we wonder how 7 4 of hearts can hit the flush when we raised 10x the blind from UTG with KK)

5 In the blinds, after a raise from UTG and four others calling, decide to call with 3 4 unsuited because 'I'm getting pot odds" (used this one a few times myself)

6. A player will go all-in with any two cards.( I've got a 50-50 chance)

In an interview with a pro the discussion was on how to prevent going on tilt. The reply was interesting and one that has helped me. He basicly said :

You have to loose every way possible. Once you've done this, you will no longer be upset when you get a bad beat because you've been there before.

I see freerolls as the best way to loose every way possible without risking my money.

I'm getting close to untiltable.

Enough said.

I just can't stand things like that. I raise 4,5x big blund from early position with 66, everyone fold except the big blind. He goes allin. I know he was playing all hands and playing very aggresivly so i called. He turns over A7 suited. Flop comes, he hits his 7 and im out. WTF! why the hell make a allin move with that stupid crap hand. Just because he had 50/50 chance. Can't stand this shit losing all the time in freerolls because im pot committed, have a good hand, but got unlucky. ( not that 66 is the best, but it also happens when i have AK and he has A7)

True that people have nothing to loose but that changes when they get close to the money. But even when you play an sng with 5 to 10$ people play like that unless they are close to the money. The only way for people to force to play better is small sng's 18 or less.

PLAYING FREEROLLS CAUSE MOST FOLKS TO PLAY TOO LOOSE BECAUSE THERE IS NO MONEY COMMING OUT OF THEIR POCKETS.

FOLKS PLAY CARDS THAT WOULD NEVER BE PLAYED IF MONEY IS INVOLVED..........................YOU MUST PLAY YOUR GAME......DO NOT VARY FROM IT IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A CHANCE OF WINNING AT FREEROLLS.

LET THE OTHER DUMMIES BET LOOSE......CONTINUE TO PLAY YOUR GAME,AND IN THE LONG RUN....YOU WILL LAST LONGER, POSSIBLY WIN SOME MONEY,AND HAVE SATISFACTION THAT YOU ARE PLAYING YOUR GAME. JUST MY OPINION. HAMMER101

Raising 4-5 times the big blind with a low pair like 66 already is a mistake so you shouldn't complain sanderking.

its a freeroll and ppl dont care they have nothing to lose half the time they have lil knowledge of the game or are drunk the real players who fold to big preflop raises are at the ring games

and even at some of ur ring games u have ppl who have money to burn at they play stupid calling raises with rags

what i believe is this this is online poker and i believe the hands are setup to make money for the site with the rake they could care who wins or loses they get there rake so i think some ppl play reckless at ring games bc they know
hey i call a big raise with my 72 i just might crack those aces and sure enough the site throws out 2 2 K

thats my take on it

As you said.."FREEROLL" no risk. I find I play different in freerolls myself, but I play more causiously, for some odd reason. I like to play, and when I go out early I feel I have't got my "poker fix" yet. LOL I am so glad for freerolls. It is also a great way to observe others and learn your own weaknesses for cheap! I am still "tiltable" though.......gotta work on that weakness......

Some say they or them play loose because there is NO money coming out of there pocket...hmmmmm well I'd Say NOT ... there winners each month for the RB of the free rolls would say there's money invloved and the ones that hit the top 100 each month in the freeroll and the real money ranks would say there is month at risk oh and the winners of the WSOP packages and the heads up games each money for money would say there is money at risk.. most people think short term.. not long term they want it now don't they .. well the ones that take the time to look long term usually come out on top..

IE the month top 100 freeroll...how many know how many times you need to hit top 10 to be in top 100 each month? The ones that don't know don't make it and there usually the ones that have nothig to lose ... which I want.

Good blog, but A 4 isn't a rag because there is the straight possibility. Ace 6 through 9 is a rag. I always limp in with Ace 2 through 5, but never 6 through 9. I fold if the flop misses anything unless I am in position to make a good sized raise to buy the pot.

You said it all......great blog!!!

Freerolls can be the coolest and the most frustrating things around. Play patient and it works most times!

These are excellent things to keep in mind, But as was said earlier, you must always remember your "poker identity" and always play your game. Also remember that when you are playing in them, that whilst you desire respect for your game, that others might not exactly think that way. That is one of the things that separates the good players from the beginners. As the beginners realise what it takes to really be great, then their games will evolve.

Just my two cents, or maybe four.... its your choice.
