Omaha str8 flush draw starting hand?

Jan 18, 2008 9:08 pm Report Abuse

I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on the basic strategies of Omaha, but every once in a while I get a starting hand that kind of baffles me. So here is one of those:

With all these callers giving me 9 to 1 odds on my call, I made the call. The suited connectors look good, but losing the flush outs and the straight outs seems to hamper possible success with this hand. But then again, there are possibly more ways to win with this hand since pairing any of these cards along with one connector card above or below also produces straight possibilities.

So I'm pretty sure pot odds dictate making this call from the SB in an unraised pot, but would this hand be a playable hand from any other position or if a raise had come from UTG?

In Omaha Hi, this is a decent hand that is playable in a lot of spots. However, in Omaha Hi Lo it's actually not a very good hand at all. You have absolutely no chance at winning the low, which means you're only playing for half the pot a lot of the time. I complete from the SB, as you did, because of pot odds and hope to get really lucky on the flop. However, I hope like heck the flop comes with 3 cards above an 8 and I really hit. If not, I probably dump the hand.

If a raise had come from under the gun, in Omaha Hi/Lo, this should be an automatic fold. In fact, if a raise came from any position, it's a fold.

Cheap Toaster, thanks for the comment.

Yes, it was definitely hoping for a prayer that the flop came all high, but no such luck. It was a King with 2 low cards, so I checked and folded.

My thinking with the raise coming from the UTG was that in this position, if I call, I most likely will not be re-raised. But I would have needed the same players to have called the initial raise to produce decent pot odds. Most likely though, they are not calling, so this would have been an easy fold.

Thanks again.

I don't view this as a very playable hand in 08 certainly not for a big raise against several players , at the most you have a possible Q high straight or flush possibilities and of course you hold some of your own outs lol,I tend to look for 3 types of hands in 08, those would be hands that have a nut hi and lo draw to them or either a plain nut hi draw or plain nut lo draw,a middle drawing hand doesn't win a lot of chips usually,gl

I agree with toaster, I would of called to get into the pot, I might have even called a raise from one of the other positions, especially in O H/L since most raises mean they have A2 type of hand. This hand works better for O high, I would raise with this hand in late position in an unraised pot.

Quiet frankly, I never play this hand, as you have all the "out's" in your hand. Kinda like getting trip's in your hand. You can't make the best hand, as you have the card's needed in your hand, and not in the deck.
