On-Line Poker: Part 2-A Different Game?

Jan 17, 2008 9:44 pm Report Abuse

No limit Texas Hold-em is an art. We all know that. The fact that anyone can go all in at any moment gives the game and you a big adrenaline rush.(at least for me) I really can't play limit so i won't go into that, what i want to compare is online nl holdem to live nl holdem. With the crazy all-inners at the beginning of an online game and the unbelievable amount of players who draw, plus the handicap of not being able to read people as well, should we play this game differently than we do live? Hands that we wouldn't play live would be acceptable online. Betting rounds are handled differently. Basically the entire holdem strategy is different. My question is "is this true"? Should we adjust our poker rules for online poker or should we continue to play the game we know is right?

I think people new to online who have only played live need to adjust their game pretty quickly if they want to win, what you know is right live isn't always right on line and could get you hurt in the long run, it is really 2 separate games so using live strategy online just isn't going to work in general,gl !

Well, I don't know about straight up changing the rules, but you definatly have to adjust your game a considerable amount between playing for real and playing online. Its pretty clear that a lot, if not most people play much looser online. A few things contribute to this, I think. First, online poker is a much faster game that real life games. Theres no chip counting, no shuffling, no waiting for people to shuffle the deck, etc..so people have to adjust to playing at different speeds, which obviously clouds your judgement to some degree. You have a minute to decide (on pstars anyways) in most cases, which is like nothing in a real game. I also think that because its computer running the cards, and therefore the odds, that they'll somehow be awarded with more luck. The odds are the same, but more people play junk hands. In reality, a 2 4 has just as many odds for hitting a pair as say, A K. People feel screwed when a 2 4 beats them, but really it was a coinflip. People just normally dont play those kinds of hands in a real game, maybe because they dont get laughed at or ridiculed when they push with a junk hand

Always base your poker play on odds and not results.
