Well folks, I'm off to have the first surgery of my life. I may be big rych but I'm not so big to say that I'm scared. I broke my arm when I was 5. I've had counless stitches - hence the reason green (Kairee) won't let me play with knives anymore. I NEVER GET TO HAVE ANY FUN ! 
I've opted to have a spinal instead of going totally under. The doc said it was my choice and the sleeper doc said if it were he, he'd go with the spinal. green is still currently against that idea but I have my reason and I'm still gonna do it.
So this is the first surgery of possibly three. Depending on tissue damage, that won't be seen until today will depend on the third surgery. So here's the breakdown of the knee.....
The tendon and ligament that holds the Patella is in two pieces. There are 4 to 6 crunchy bits that will need to be removed because the Patella (knee cap) is shattered. The arrows in the opposite directions are the way the tendon and ligament split. The tendon has a nice chunk of knee cap still in it so this is the plan.
Doc is gonna drill some holes into the knee cap and if the tissues are good, stitch it up through the knee cap and that will pull the tendon back together. If the tissue is not good enough he will have to sew in some kind of cable to loop around all of the parts that are no longer conected and put it together that way. If he has to use the cable then that will be the third surgery because it will have to be removed.
Once I heal from that I will have to have orthoscopic surgery to repair the miniscus that was also torn when gravity decided to pull me down. The miniscus is on the under side of the knee and the Doc can't fix it the same time he fixes all that I messed up on the front. soooooooooooooooooooooooo YEEHAWWWWWWWWWWWWW ! Definately gotta have two surgeries.

Good luck to you both and you surely will be in my thoughts and prayers. Don't worry about the anethesia as I was quiet affraid when I was pregnant of the epidural and once it was done I realized that I realized it wasn't bad at all.
It was actually quite cool that I could see things (look above into the lights as there's refections or at least in the ones I looked at) they were doing and couldn't feel the pain.

ouch, I think I would have them knock me out. I have had plenty of stitches and so forth like you. I just don't wanna see what happens. lol.
Good luck man, the doctors have done this more times than you. I am sure they know what they are doing.
That rehab is gonna be a *****, I reckon you know that. One day at a time is how to do it. It's hard but listen to the doctors and don't overdo any thing regarding the knee.
It took me a couple years and I was playing rugby. That was a long time ago. lol
