After playing in many freerolls and placing in only a few i was seeing if anyone else thinks they are worth the time?

Hey, the freerolls are there for the entertainment value...if you are there just to bring in some change then no, they arent worth the time.

Which freerolls? PS, FTP, UB, Railbirds?

Here is my take on 2 of them:

I think the railbird freerolls are a great place to socialize and build a bankroll. It takes less than 2 hours to get ITM. And ranking freerolls are even better since, if you finish in the top 100 for the month, you gain entry into a special $1,000 freeroll for the top 100 people.

The PS Astronomer freerolls are awful. It takes about 6 hours to get a ticket to another tourney (WR2) and ticket is really only worth about 50 cents (WR2 has a $2,000 prize pool with about 4,000 entrants). Then it will take at least 2 hours just to cash in the WR2 and 600th place only pays $1.

The time spent sharing the common love of the game with other Railbirds is of great value to me. The money up for grabs by winning a freeroll means very little to me, but beating all these good poker players, that is very much desireable to me. ............Freerolls are like a sore dick, you just can't beat them....lol...

.......play on ....TC..............

The question is why do you play the game? If it's to have fun, learn and get better. Freerolls are a great place to spend time. If it's about money and turning pro................ not so much.

I'm just working my way out of a 3 month funk. May I suggest trying something I did for the first time this month as the result of seeing others do it here at birds. Set some modest goals for yourself. End goals really help withdecision making during a game. Especially in tournaments. 1srt month make them reasonable attainable, but still a challenge. And don't just write the goals down. Write how your going to attain them. Look at my December goals blog for a few ideas on how too go about it as an example.

You may play 1 tourney a day at railbirds. So an example might be 3 cashes and 1 top 25 finish for the month. Or if your faily new to the game finishing in the top 25% twice in a month, ect. The goals should fit where your skill level is in the game. I love reading blogs where someone is excited at cashing for the first time. It's different for each of us. Give it a try and good luck on the felts> Stan

the rb freerolls are great and fun. The FT freerolls take a long time to complete and you cant play your game till after the first hour when all the donks have busted themselves out

ilpiugrande............ Astronomy freerolls are much better than you think. Generally it's 4 hours to win a ticket excluding "Hubbles" Texas Holdem no limit donk fest. Round 2 has a first place prize of around $300 with 4-5K participatting. As you said cashing around 600 players. Unless you can give me the name of a site were 15% cash and 2K freerolls are twice a weak with $300 plus first prize I feel you might want to reconsider your position on the astronomy freerolls.  Tilt has top 27 cash, top prize is $15 and 2700 players. Not spectacular. But as I wrote in a recent blog analyzing freerolls the key to the Astronomy freerolls is the limit games. HORSE, Stud, Razz, a variation of stud, and Omaha. These are the games with smaller round 1 fields, weaker compitition, and during off peak hours sometimes less than 30000 players in some games such as RAZZ and stud.
Stan7777 Dec 5, 2007 5:33 pm

........3000 players not 30K. LMAO

To me, they are "worth the time" because 1, I want to practice playing poker as much as I can, against all kind of playing styles, and 2, I want to be able to play real money games a bit before I actually make a deposit and play for real.
What I'm finding now, of course, is that I'm apparently much better at freerolls than real money games. There's definitely a jump in skill level that I'm still trying to adjust for.

I hear what you are saying Stan and I have played in several WR2 freerolls (and will be playing this Saturday 10 am as well) and really enjoy them. Since there are about 4,000 people with a $2,000 prize pool, I think the math is correct that the ticket is worth about 50 cents.

I just checked my e-mails, and I was mistaken about the time it took to win the tickets, they were all slightly less than 5 hours, but, in two of those cases I could easily have sat out after 4 hours and still gotten a ticket.

I also checked my last couple of FTP freeroll cashes and it looks like it took about 5.5 hours to make the final table and win about $4 (I came in 7th both times).

So, it would take 6 hours with a max possible win of $15 on FTP vs. possibly 10 hours to get $15 in the astronomer freerolls (4-5 to get the ticket and 4-5 to make the final 2 tables in WR2 (doesn't pay $15 till 16th place)) BUT, as you point out, the upside is a possible $300!

So, I stand corrected, they are not a total waste of time.

not only are freerolls fun but a challenge......whats better than to go in and slay a dragon ??? lol..........topcat....you get 20 lashes for your remark in your comment ...shame on you !!!!....ordering a book for you called "3 Trails In The Sand " by Peter Dragon.......lmao

I love the freerolls because I am not about to spend my own money on a game that I'm only moderately good at at this time. If I ever get to the point where I'm consistently close to final table a majority of the time then I might consider spending my own money. But I'm hardly at that skill level now. It's an enjoyable hobby but if you're playing freerolls to make money then it's a long long road to get any.
AgainstMeFan187 Dec 5, 2007 6:56 pm
If your playing for fun or "play chips" anyway then why not just do a freeroll and maybe make some real money.. I still play them even when I have real money in my account..
